Two-out hitting and season-high double play numbers lead to victory
THIBODAUX – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team took hold of the lead early and stretched it out late in capturing an 8-2 win over Nicholls on Tuesday, February 27 at Swanner Field in Thibodaux, Louisiana.
Sam Roe provided the early offense for Louisiana (8-9) when she launched a two-run home run in the first inning. The Colonels (11-8) got a run back with a home run of their own in the third inning.
Victoria Valdez (2-for-3, double, 3 RBI) was the catalyst for the Cajuns stretching the lead out, starting when she delivered a two-out RBI single in the fourth for a 3-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, it was another two-out delivery from Valdez that began the pull away. Her two-run double jumpstarted a five-run inning that stretched the UL advantage to 8-1.
Keyed by Roe (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) and Valdez the Ragin' Cajuns scored all of their runs with two outs – the return of a trend that was the theme of the season's opening weekend (Feb. 8-11 in Louisiana Classics).
Louisiana displayed its top defensive effort of the season by turning three ground ball double plays to support the pitching efforts of Sam Landry (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 5 K). With the defensive gems behind her, Landry faced only three batters over the minimum.
Four different Cajuns posted multiple hits, with Alexa Langeliers and Brooke Ellestad joining Roe and Valdez in tallying two hits, as the squad totaled up 11 hits in the contest – the second straight game with double digits and fourth in the last seven games.
UL collected its second consecutive midweek victory, following up last Tuesday's 9-3 win over Louisiana Tech.
The Ragin' Cajuns extended their series win streak over Nicholls to 11 games. Louisiana won for the 36th time in the past 39 meetings dating back to 2000 and upped its all-time series lead over the Colonels to 91-24.
Tuesday's meeting in Thibodaux marked the first in a home-and-home this season between UL and Nicholls. The Colonels return the visit to Lamson Park on April 17.
