Ragin’ Cajuns drop slugfest to Redhawks in OU Tournament opener
Sophie Piskos' grand slam in the fifth vaulted Louisiana (8-10) into a 9-8 lead, completing the storm back from an 8-1 deficit.
The first four hitters for the Redhawks (10-3) in the sixth inning all reached base leading to the tying run crossing the plate. The very next at bat a sacrifice fly foul out returned the lead to Miami at 10-9, then a two-run single immediately followed adding insurance.
The Ragin' Cajuns received a solo home run Victoria Valdez trimming the deficit to 12-10 with two outs in the seventh. Denali Loecker drew an eight-pitch walk to give Piskos another chance to stun the Redhawks, however a ground ball was induced and shortstop Reagan Bartholomew fielded it to halt the two-out rally.
Piskos paced UL with five RBI highlighted by the grand slam. Loecker had the other multiple-RBI effort: her run-scoring double in the fourth inning sparking a three-run frame and hit-by-pitch RBI in the fifth setting up the Piskos grand slam.
The Redhawks posted four home runs in the contest with each one coming during the sprint out to the 8-1 lead.
Louisiana was dealt its first loss against a non-Power 5 team this season. The 10 runs marked the most scored in a defeat since March 19, 2022 at Georgia Southern (L, 10-12) – UL entered the game with an 8-1 mark when scoring three runs or more.
Friday's matchup marked the first-ever meeting between Louisiana and Miami University on the softball diamond.
