Louisiana drops to 18th heading into final round

HENDERSON, Nevada Burke Alford used a late surge on the front nine to move into the overall lead after two rounds and lead the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team at the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate on Tuesday at Reflection Bay Golf Club.
 
The final round of the three-day, 54-hole event will begin on Wednesday at 10 a.m. CST with live results available at GolfStat.com.
 
Louisiana, which will tee off beginning at 11 a.m. CST, will be paired with Central Arkansas, Southern Illinois and UAB in the final round.
 
Alford recorded a 1-under-par 71 to lead Louisiana and move to 6-under-138 after 36 holes – one stroke ahead of Walker Isley of UNC Wilmington for the overall lead.
 
Beginning on the No. 10 tee, Alford bogeyed the par-3, No. 13 before converting consecutive birdies to move to 1-under. After back-to-back bogeys at 16 and 17, Alford made the turn at 1-over-37 before recording his fourth bogey of the day on the par-4, 393-yard No. 1.
 
Alford would recover as he carded three birdies over the final eight holes to move into the lead. The Shreveport native, whose 11 birdies in two rounds is one off the overall lead, recorded a birdie on the par-4, No. 4 before posting birdies on the par-5, No. 6 and par-3, No. 8 to finish at par or below for the 12th time during the 2023-24 season.
 
Malan Potgieter recorded an even-par 72 for Louisiana to finish at 2-over 144 after two rounds with Eli Ortego (75-75-150) and Jake Marler (75-75-150) each posting identical 3-over 75 for the second consecutive day.
 
Freshman Dillon Barnard posted a 5-over 77 to sit at 11-over 155 after two rounds with Maximilian Feistmantl, competing individually, posting a 3-over 75 to finish at 10-over 154.
 
Arkansas State surged into the lead after two rounds after posting a team score of 9-under 279 to finish at 566 overall. First-day leader Little Rock (567) and VCU (567) finished one shot back in the standings with Santa Clara (568) and Long Beach State (569) rounding out the top five.
