LSU secures outcome with stranglehold on the boards

BATON ROUGE – A decided advantage on play inside the arc carried No. 4-ranked LSU to an 85-57 win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team on Sunday, December 15 at the PMAC in Baton Rouge.

Behind a hefty 53-22 edge in rebounding the Tigers converted 30 of 41 free throw attempts, outscored the Ragin' Cajuns by 24 points (36-12) in the paint and collected 22 second chance points.

Louisiana dropped in seven three-pointers on the LSU defense in an attempt to overcome the rebounding deficit and limited trips (only 14) to the free throw line. The team's defense forced the Tigers into a season-high tying 21 turnovers, only was unable to gain a huge benefit scoring just 12 points off the hosts' miscues.

The Ragin' Cajuns (4-4) put together a 20-plus point third quarter and outshot the Tigers (12-0) in the second half, 46 percent to 44 percent, but the slow start in the first half, shooting 25 percent (8-of-32), offset the strong push after the break.

Tamiah Robinson returned to play and sparked the Cajuns offense with four 3-point makes as she built her team-leading 15-point performance.

Helping LSU control play was the double-double efforts from Jersey Wolfenbarger (18 points, 15 rebounds) and Aneesah Morrow (15 points, 15 rebounds). Wolfenbarger turned in 12 points and 11 rebounds in the first half alone as the Tigers kept the Cajuns at arm's length.

LSU would counter each push by Louisiana with one of its own, starting with an 8-0 run after Robinson's first triple of the contest sliced the Tigers' lead to 6-5 at 4:43 of the first quarter.

The inside advantage began to pay off for the Tigers early in the second as Wolfenbarger made a pair of second-chance layups inside the eight-minute mark to increase the lead to 20-11.

Robinson connected for a three-pointer at 6:49 to lower the deficit to six points, at 22-16, but LSU scored 12 unanswered points to reassert control before the halftime break.

Erica Lafayette's three-point make at 7:44 of the third ignited a 9-2 run that was capped off by Kamryn Jones' swipe and score at 6:31, cutting the Tigers' lead to 44-31. LSU turned to its defense to reverse the momentum, turning UL over twice on its next two possessions and converting baskets to stretch the lead to 48-31.

Lafayette was good again from beyond the arc at 2:23 to finish off a mini-run that lowered the deficit to 51-38, however the Tigers responded going inside to collect three free throws and a layup for a quick five-point surge that upped the lead to 56-38 by the 1:40 mark. The Cajuns would get no closer than 15 points the remainder of the contest.

LSU picked up its 31st consecutive victory in the all-time series. The loss kept the Ragin' Cajuns winless away from the Cajundome this season.

UP NEXT FOR LOUISIANA
Louisiana returns to the Cajundome on Wednesday, December 18 to host Auburn in the annual Education Game, scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. tipoff. Nearly 6,000 Acadiana-area students are expected to be in attendance for the field trip outing.

The event is open to all students in grades K-12 and admission is free. Pre-registered classrooms receive a Ragin' Cajuns t-shirt, activity pack, and a discounted meal deal that includes a hot dog, fries, and drink.

After making three straight trips to Auburn since the 2018-19 season, including each of the past two seasons, the Ragin' Cajuns are hosting the Tigers in the Cajundome for the first time since December 2017.

The Auburn contest marks Louisiana's final non-conference game prior to the start of Sun Belt Conference play on the road on December 29 in Statesboro, Georgia at Georgia Southern.
