WBB Tamera Johnson Drives Up Court vs. Loyola (La.) 11.27.23

Louisiana and Troy Resume Women’s Hoops Rivalry Wednesday

1/9/2024 8:06:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Ragin’ Cajuns and Trojans battled into overtime the previous two matchups

TROY, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team takes the court in Troy, Alabama at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, January 10 to face off with Troy at the Trojan Arena, marking the start of the back half portion of a January-opening, four-game road trip.

Louisiana (5-7, 1-2 SBC) meets a Sun Belt West Division foe for the first time this season and takes in the first of two matchups with the Trojans (5-8, 2-1 SBC) over an 11-day span. The two teams are scheduled to meet again on Saturday, January 20 at the Cajundome.

It's a true doubleheader day on Wednesday at Trojan Arena as both school's men's programs are scheduled to meet 30 minutes after the conclusion of the game.

The UL-Troy contest is being televised on ESPN+ and a radio broadcast is available on The GOAT 103.3 FM and 1420 AM in the Acadiana region and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.

The Cajuns seek to reverse recent fortune against the Trojans. Last season, Troy twice managed to come away victorious in overtime in the season series between the two programs.

Louisiana also seeks to build upon two of its best offensive performances of the season. During the ODU-JMU swing that opened the current road trip, the Cajuns averaged 69 points per game on 44 percent shooting.

UL split the start of the road trip, erasing an 11-point first quarter deficit before overtaking ODU in the second half on Thursday (Jan. 4) and having a near-miss on Saturday (Jan. 6) at JMU having a chance to win in regulation before the Dukes slipped away with the win in overtime.

While in Virginia last week, the Cajuns welcomed back leading scorer and leading rebounder Tamera Johnson (nose injury) from a recent two-game absence and her impact was immediate as evidenced by a season-high 20 points in the ODU win. Louisiana also continued to receive valuable point production from the bench led by Jaylyn James' 14 points per game over the two-game set.

Johnson, who has scored double digits in 10 of her 11 appearances, averages a team-leading 13.6 points per game. The Lafayette native averages five-plus field goal makes on 46 percent shooting (51-of-111).

Brandi Williams follows with 12.0 points per game and a team-best 24 triples and the duo of Tamiah Robinson (25) and Destiny Rice (24) have 49 assists between them. Johnson tops the charts with 74 rebounds (22 offense, 52 defense) and is supported by a group of five others with 20-plus boards.

Troy is coming off a road trip sweep garnering wins at Georgia Southern and Coastal Carolina a week ago, continuing the bounce back from an 0-6 start to the season.

The Trojans have won four of their last five games with former Ragin' Cajun Makayia Hallmon leading the way via the score column at 18.8 points per game. Meanwhile, Tai'Sheka Porchia (17 points, 8.6 rebounds) and Ja'Mia Hollings (15.4 points, 8.8 rebounds) have nearly averaged a double-double during the turnaround.
