The Cajuns have won two straight heading into the weekend
CONWAY, S.C. – A pair of wins last week has propelled the Louisiana women's tennis team back over .500 for the season and this week they hit the road for a pair of Sun Belt Conference contests. On Saturday the Ragin' Cajuns take on Coastal Carolina before heading to Georgia Southern on Sunday.
First serve from Conway, South Carolina is slated for 9 a.m. CT while Sunday's match in Statesboro, Georgia is also scheduled for 9 a.m. CT.
The Cajuns won both matches last week even with a little drama on Wednesday, March 15. A late comeback and a third set tiebreaker win for Cristina Tchanichev clinched a win over Gonzaga, 4-3. Then on Saturday against ULM, the Cajuns finished strong in a 5-2 road win, their first SBC win of the season.
Tchanichev, Angelique Berrat and Carla Urchoeguia are all tied for the team lead with six singles victories. Urchoeguia has been a force on court two going 5-3. On court three, Berrat has found her spot with a 4-1 record while Tchanichev has gone 5-1 on court four this spring. In doubles, Berrat and Urchoeguia have gone 5-3 as a pairing while Momoko Yoshimura and Angel Santiago have matched that record as well.
Coming into the weekend the Chanticleers have won 10 straight after losing their first four matches this spring. They are 2-0 in SBC play after pulling off a win at home over Georgia Southern and a road win over Georgia State. Anna Babayan, Jesse Hollins and Megan Hopton have been the driving force of the team, each winning eight contests. Babayan and Hopton have also been tough to beat as a doubles pairing, going 12-2 so far this year.
Georgia Southern has won three of their last four contests, with their only loss in that span coming from Coastal Carolina. They've been tough to beat at home, going 4-1 this spring. Nanaka Kijima has been their best player this spring as she's gone 11-1 and won her last 11 matchups. Paula Hijos and Silvia Martinez have won nine contests each, with Martinez riding an eight match winning streak heading into the weekend.
