At 19 games, Louisiana’s home winning streak is tied for the fourth-longest in the country
LAFAYETTE, Louisiana – The Louisiana men's basketball team continued their dominance in the Cajundome on Wednesday, holding off Eastern Kentucky for their 19th straight home win, 73-62. The win moved the Cajuns into a tie for the fourth-longest home winning streak in the nation, tying them with Boise State.
Themus Fulks sparked the offense with a game-high 21 points, his third 20-point game of the season. The junior got to the line often, finishing the night 9-of-12 on free throws. Kobe Julien continued his sensational play, scoring 17 points with five rebounds. Kentrell Garnett was also in double figures with 12 points.
Coming into the night the Colonels led the country in rebounding at 47.3 per game but the Cajuns came prepared to clean up the glass. Louisiana grabbed 35, led by Joe Charles with 10 and Hosana Kitenge with nine, and allowed the Colonels to just 36. The Cajun defense was swarming all night, forcing 19 turnovers, and swatting three shots.
Playing in front of the home crowd for the first time since November 27, it took the Cajuns some time to get into an offensive rhythm. Fulks scored the first basket two minutes into the game and was followed by buckets from Garnett and Julien for a 6-5 lead.
The Colonels responded with a 5-0 run to take the lead, but Garnett knocked down a three to pull back within one. The visitors built their largest lead of the night at 19-14 with eight minutes to go but the Cajuns quickly erased it. Brandon Hardy connected on a three from the wing and Fulks hit back-to-back jumpers to put the Cajuns back on top. Kitenge finished the 9-0 run with a layup for the four-point lead.
The Cajuns held a two-point halftime lead, but the Colonels quickly erased it with a 5-0 run. Baskets by Julien and Charles flipped the lead back to the Cajuns, but the visitors answered with another basket and retook the lead themselves. Garnett broke the back-and-forth game with back-to-back baskets for a four-point lead.
With Louisiana leading 41-36, they broke the game open, thanks most in part to four free throws by Fulks and took an 11-point advantage. The Colonels would get back within three, but a pair of Charles layups and a bucket by Julien pushed the lead back to nine. With just under a minute to go, Julien ended any doubts with a three to extend the lead back to double figures down the stretch.
The Cajuns are on the road next Sunday in Lake Charles to take on McNeese before heading to Rice on Friday.
