Cajuns set the tone early with defense, threw the knockout punch with their offense
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team's defense bewildered App State the first two sets and the offense turned up the intensity late to finish off a 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 28-26) sweep of the Mountaineers as Senior Weekend got underway at E.K. Long Gym on Friday, November 10.
Louisiana (17-12, 8-7 Sun Belt) pressured App State (13-13, 4-11 Sun Belt) into a combined 15 attack errors over the first two stanzas, limiting the visitors to a mere 11 kills on a higher than usual negative hitting percentage of -.060.
The work of the defense combined with 21 kills off of a highly more effective hitting percentage of .233 led the Ragin' Cajuns to back-to-back, double-digit victories to start the night, opening a commanding 2-0 lead.
To close out the win which snapped a five-match losing streak to App State in the regular season that dated back to 2018 – and was the team's third consecutive home win – Louisiana answered the call when the Mountaineers engaged in an offensive shootout in the third set.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UL used timely scoring runs to pull away from App State in the quick 2-0 start.
The Cajuns got a combined five kills from Shyia Richardson and Kara Barnes during a 10-2 run that stretched the first-set lead to 20-12. In Set 2 the breakaway came earlier, a 9-1 run, which included forcing the Mountaineers into four miscues, broke open what was a 4-3 Cajuns advantage.
The Mountaineers offense came to life in Set 3, scoring 18 kills during the frame. The increased productivity had the visitors in the lead all the way until extra points came into play.
With a late surge, the Cajuns offense wound up surpassing App State with 19 kills in the final frame. The strong finish started with six kills, two apiece off the hands of Richardson and Lauryn Hill, as UL quickly erased a 20-15 deficit and forged a 24-all tie.
Richardson got the Cajuns into extra points, Hill notched her first of two kills in the extended play to stave off the first set point and setter Siena DeCambra came up a tap-over of a would-be overpass to even the score at 26-all and set up the heroic finish.
On the next rally, Hill fired away for her fourth kill after entering in the latter stages of the Set 3 (when App State ahead 17-12) to give UL its first lead in the frame. Louisiana promptly prevented an App State answer as Mya Wilson and Celeste Darling blocked down first attack attempt of the ensuing rally to record match point.
LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Richardson posted a double-double of 15 kills and 11 digs. She supplied at least four kills each set, capped off by a team-leading six scores in the sweep-clincher. She recorded double-digit kills for the seventh consecutive match (18th time overall) and notched her 10th double-double of the season.
Darling was the next-highest producer with eight kills while Barnes landed five kills on only seven swings.
The top defensive honors went to Barnes who posted her season-high total of six blocks and libero Mio Yamamoto who tallied a match-high 15 digs.
Wilson's three blocks moved to her 70 total blocks in a single season for the first time in her collegiate career and within three blocks of reaching the 300-mark for her career.
DeCambra assisted on 32 of Louisiana's 40 kills and added eight digs and three blocks to her final stat line.
