With entire roster returning, Ragin' Cajuns excited for possibilities that lie ahead
LAFAYETTE - A 17-win season which included winning the prestigious H-E-B Tournament of Champions, rolling off a 14-match win streak and being ranked in the final ITA poll of the spring 2022 dual match season highlighted Luc Godin's first season with the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team. Days away from the start of his second season, Godin is eagerly anticipating what's in store for the Ragin' Cajuns this spring.
Louisiana (17-6, 4-2 SBC in 2022), which opens the spring 2023 dual match season on Sunday, Jan. 15 in Lubbock, Texas at Texas Tech, has its entire roster intact from the remarkable run last season. That includes the No. 1 doubles tandem of Karlo Kajin and Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez who enter the season in the Top 30 of the ITA's doubles rankings and double-digit singles winners Sanchez Gonzalez (15-6), Oriol Fillat Gimenez (16-4), Vasil Dimitrov (16-7) and Calin Postea (14-5).
Godin has prepared a schedule that will challenge the team and prepare them for potential postseason-caliber contests. Louisiana is set to take part in the ITA Kickoff Weekend and play at least 10 matches against teams ranked in the ITA's final Top 75 ranking of 2022 including Tennessee (No. 6), LSU (No. 33), Oklahoma (No. 34) Washington (No. 39), Texas Tech (No. 41), Charlotte (No. 48), Georgia State (No. 62), South Alabama (No. 68), Old Dominion (No. 70), Florida Gulf Coast (No. 73) and Portland (No. 74).
After beginning the season on the road in January, the Ragin' Cajuns make their debut at Cajun Courts from Friday-Saturday, February 3-4 hosting the Louisiana Winter Classic tournament that weekend.
Ahead of the season opener at Texas Tech, Godin took a moment to examine the state of the program and his team's mindset.
Q: How would you assess the team's progress in the fall season?
LG: "We had a good fall season. The team as a whole continued to move forward, which is what we focus on here in the program. No matter how big or small the steps are, we want to make sure that we are moving in the right direction."
Q: What will be the main areas of emphasis early on and what will be the keys to success this season?
LG: "The main areas of focus will stay the same and remain the same as they were last year, which is to improve every time we have a chance to walk on the court, in the fitness center, or in the classroom, or get involved in the community."
Q: Now in your second year with the program and with this team, what excites you most about the group and its potential this season?
LG: "The unselfishness of this group and the relationships they have created amongst each other. We have the ingredients to create something special this year."
