Late Surge Lifts Louisiana To Opening Win In San Juan, 81-77

Four players in double figures as Ragin' Cajuns use late 10-2 run to seal win
SAN JUAN, P.R. – Kentrell Garnett scored five of his team-high, tying 17 points in a decisive 10-2 run over the final 3:37 as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Basketball team opened its Summer Tour of Puerto Rico with an 81-77 win over the LPB Blue All-Stars on Friday at Coliseo Mario Quijote Morales.
Garnett, who was 6 of 7 from the floor and 3-for-3 from behind the 3-point line, and Joe Charles each scored 17 points to lead four players in double figures for Louisiana, which will face the LPB White All-Stars at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday. The game will be streamed live on Facebook (LigaLBPOficial) and YouTube (LigadeBaloncestoPuertorrique).
Jordan Brown went 7-for-11 from the floor and scored 16 points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds for the Ragin' Cajuns. Louisiana held a convincing 55-31 advantage on the glass while outscoring the LPB Blue, 20-13, in the final period.
Louisiana led 22-15 after the first period and 39-35 at halftime before the LPB Blue used its 3-point game to stage a 64-61 lead heading into the final quarter. The Ragin' Cajuns trailed 75-71 after Charlioni Vargas hit a 3-pointer with 3:37 remaining before Charles, who was 7-for-10 from the floor, answered with a 3-pointer from the top of the key to cut the deficit to 75-74.
Vargas, who finished with 19 points for LPB Blue, would make two of three free throws for a 77-74 lead before Garnett would tie the game at the 2:17 mark when he got a friendly bounce on his 3-pointer from the right wing.
After Greg Williams, Jr., steal on LPB Blue's ensuing possession, the Ragin' Cajuns took the lead for good when Garnett connected on a floater in the lane for a 79-77 lead with 1:50 remaning.
Brown would follow for Louisiana with putback off a Williams, Jr., miss with 41 seconds remaining to extend the lead before Michael Thomas would get a steal with the clock winding down to seal the win.
Thomas added 10 points for Louisiana, which shot 44 percent from the floor and 47 percent in the second half. Brown added four steals for the Ragin' Cajuns, who scored 21 points off 18 LPB Blue turnovers.
Alvin Sierra led LPB Blue, which dropped an 87-80 decision to Louisiana Tech on Thursday, with a game-high 27 points. Chris Perez posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds for LPB Blue, which was 22-for-34 from the free throw line compared to 10-for-17 for Louisiana.
