Louisiana's nine selections (five first team) led the way; Jourdyn Campbell receives two major awards
LAFAYETTE - Jourdyn Campbell was named Hitter and Newcomer of the Year and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team had a state-leading nine total representatives on the 2022 Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) All-Louisiana collegiate softball team, the organization announced on Thursday (June 23).
Campbell - a Kingwood, Texas, sophomore who plays third base - becomes the third Ragin' Cajun to win two major awards, joining outfielder Ciara Bryan (2021) and catcher Lexie Elkins (2014) who also accomplished the hitter/newcomer double. The Texas A&M transfer produced 50-plus hits (22 for extra bases) on a .400-plus average and totaled 20 multiple-hit games during Louisiana's run to the Sun Belt Conference regular season and conference tournament championships.
The Ragin' Cajuns nine overall All-Louisiana selections, as well as the five first team honorees, marked the most collected amongst all of the state's collegiate softball programs in both categories.
Joining Campbell on the first team is Sophie Piskos at catcher, Stormy Kotzelnick - the Freshman of the Year runner-up - at first base, Melissa Mayeux at second base and Karly Heath at designated player.
Louisiana's second team honorees are pitchers Sam Landry and Meghan Schorman and outfielder Maddie Hayden. Shortstop Alexa Langeliers received honorable mention.
Each one of Louisiana's honorees were All-Sun Belt Conference selections. It's the third postseason honor for Campbell, Kotzelnick, Langeliers, Mayeux and Piskos who were also selected to the NFCA All-Central Region team.
A Louisiana Sports Writers Association panel of sports media and college softball publicists selected the 36th edition of the All-Louisiana Softball team, based on statistics and performances through the teams' conference tournaments. Those statistics were used in this story.
