Ragin' Cajuns Top Jaguars in High-Scoring Series Opener
4/14/2022 10:07:00 PM | Softball
Hitters steal the spotlight as the two teams combined for 17 runs
Alexa Langeliers, Stormy Kotzelnick and Kramer Eschete each produced multiple RBI and combined for seven total to offset the four home runs the Jaguars were able to gather off of the Ragin' Cajuns pitching staff.
With the win Louisiana (27-10, 13-3 Sun Belt) took early control of the weekend series with South Alabama (16-15, 9-2 Sun Belt), moved one step closer to vaulting into first place in the Sun Belt standings and now sits one win away from extending its streak of consecutive SBC series won to 70.
The scoring came in bunches early as the two teams combined for six runs in the first inning alone. The Ragin' Cajuns took advantage of an extended inning caused by a Jaguars error to push across three runs highlighted by a two-run triple from Langeliers. The Jaguars answered back in the bottom half using a pair of home runs to pick up three runs of their own.
Another score swap occurred in the third inning, this time with USA having a plus-one advantage to open a 5-4 lead. Louisiana didn't trail for long as Kotzelnick poked a two-run double into the right center field gap the next half inning.
The Ragin' Cjauns, who claimed the lead for the third time following Kotzelnick's clutch hit, wouldn't relinquish the advantage the remainder of the contest. Langeliers launched a solo home run in the fifth inning to open a two-run edge, 7-5, which proved key as the Jaguars posted a home run of their own in the sixth inning.
The series-opening win was solidified in the seventh inning when Louisiana produced three additional runs - all coming on a two-out rally - to extend the lead to 10-6. Sophie Piskos walked, Melissa Mayeux singled and Langeliers was intentionally walked to load the bases. The Jaguars couldn't get the force play to keep their deficit at a run, though, as Karly Heath drew a walk and Eschete delivered a two-run single to further expand the lead.
Langeliers homered for the third time in four games since returning to play on Friday, April 8 (had missed previous nine games with an injury since March 20) and posted her fifth multiple-RBI game overall and second with three or more RBI.
Kotzelnick's go-ahead, two-RBI double in the fourth inning made her the first Ragin' Cajun in the 2022 season to reach 30 RBI and moved her past Jourdyn Campbell and back into the team lead with exactly 30 RBI.
Meghan Schorman totaled five innings of relief after entering in the first inning and settling down the Jaguars offense. She posted key scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth inning after her squad had put up the runs to reclaim the lead. Schorman yielded just three hits and struck out 11.
Thursday's outcome stretched Louisiana's series-best win streak over South Alabama to 18 games and upped the program's lead in the all-time series to 40-11 (15-6 in Mobile). The Ragin' Cajuns have won every matchup dating back to 2016 (last loss to USA was 2015 Sun Belt Tournament championship game.)
