Ragin' Cajuns use timely hitting and strong showing in the circle to sweep Good Friday doubleheader
Louisiana (29-10, 15-3 Sun Belt) also extended its nation-leading total of consecutive conference series won to 70 straight, a streak which began back in March 2013.
The series clincher was locked up in the third inning when Melissa Mayeux doubled home Sophie Piskos, who started the two-out rally with a double, and scored when Alexa Langeliers followed with a single to center field. The sequence pulled the Ragin' Cajuns ahead 2-1, erasing an early lead that South Alabama (16-17, 9-4 Sun Belt) gained with a first-inning home run.
From there Kandra Lamb (4-2/3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 8 K) and Meghan Schorman (2-1/3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 K) went on to combine to hold the Jaguars scoreless the rest of the way. The offense gained separation for the duo with a five-run fifth inning that was highlighted by a two-run triple from Karly Heath that provided the knockout punch.
The path to the sweep required patience from the Ragin' Cajuns who found themselves down 1-0 in a pitcher's duel from the start after the Jaguars strung together three hits to plate a run in the first inning.Â
Sam Landry (5-2/3 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 8 K) regrouped and would match USA's Olivia Lackie through the fifth inning to buy the offense time to discover the timely hit that would help the Ragin' Cajuns overcome the Jaguars.
A leadoff home run from Samantha Graeter in the sixth inning evened the score and sparked Louisiana's uprising. Kayla Falterman followed with a double down the left field line, stole third base and later scored the go-ahead run on Maddie Hayden's grounder to second base.
Lamb and Landry worked together to shut down the Jaguars in their final two trips to the plate and preserve the lead.
After the leadoff batter reached in the sixth inning, Lamb took over and posted three straight outs to halt any potential response. In the seventh inning, Landry re-entered to end a lengthy pinch-hit at bat with a strikeout, then induced a ground out for the final out after USA had managed to load the bases.
Friday's results stretched Louisiana's series-best win streak over South Alabama to 20 games and upped the program's lead in the all-time series to 42-11 (17-6 in Mobile). The Ragin' Cajuns have won every matchup dating back to 2016 (last loss to USA was 2015 Sun Belt Tournament championship game.
Louisiana swept a Sun Belt series from one of the conference's 2021 NCAA Tournament participants for the second straight weekend, increasing its current winning streak to six games. The squad is now a season-high 19 games above the .500 mark.
