PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team had five individuals receive recognition on the 2022 All-Sun Belt Men's Tennis Team highlighted by Oriol Fillat Gimenez who was named the Sun Belt Player to Watch, the conference office announced on Wednesday (April 13, 2022).
In addition to Fillat Gimenez's award, the Ragin' Cajuns received four All-Sun Belt singles awards led by first team selection Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez and the second team honorees which included Fillat Gimenez, Vasil Dimitrov and Calin Postea.
In All-Sun Belt doubles, Louisiana's No. 1 tandem of Karlo Kajin and Sanchez Gonzalez received second team recognition.
The honors were voted upon by the league's seven men's tennis head coaches. Louisiana (17-5, 4-2 Sun Belt) tied South Alabama with a league-leading four singles players recognized on the All-Sun Belt Team in head coach Luc Godin's debut season.
In receiving the Player to Watch honor, Fillat Gimenez is the SBC coaches' frontrunner to be one of the top returning players next season. A sophomore from Barcelona, Spain, he led Louisiana with an impressive 16-4 mark in singles, sparked by a 13-game winning streak from February 5 to March 18.
Fillat Gimenez was a stronghold for the Ragin' Cajuns on Court 3, claiming 15 wins. His 15 singles wins at No. 3 led all Sun Belt players and he ranked No. 3 overall in the Sun Belt for singles victories. Fillat Gimenez posted the match-clinching wins for Louisiana against ETSU and UTSA that claimed the prestigious H-E-B Tournament of Champions title.
Sanchez Gonzalez is Louisiana's first representative on the All-Sun Belt First team since the 2019 season (Jan Galka). He was a mainstay for Louisiana at No. 2 singles, claiming 12 wins at the slot, and closed the final three weeks with a strong showing at No. 1 singles (3-1 overall, 2-1 Sun Belt).
By closing the regular season winning eight of his last 10 in singles matchups, Sanchez Gonzalez totaled an overall record of 15-5. He posted a team-best, and Sun Belt-best, 5-1 mark in singles in conference matches. His overall season performance was highlighted by a win over then-No. 68 Alex Martinez of Oklahoma in straight sets on March 20.
The Second Team All-Sun Belt honors for Dimitrov (15-7) and Postea (14-4) spotlight their impressive collegiate debut seasons. Both were part of Louisiana's quartet of double-digit singles winners alongside fellow All-Sun Belt honorees Sanchez Gonzalez and Fillat Gimenez.
Dimitrov ranked second on Louisiana's squad and Top 5 in the Sun Belt with 15 overall wins, proving to be a strong anchor for the Ragin' Cajuns at No. 6 singles with a 9-2 mark at the position. His solid 4-2 Sun Belt record was highlighted by finishing first in singles both days to set the tone for Louisiana's Sun Belt Conference weekend sweep of Georgia Southern and Georgia State.
Postea excelled at various positions for the Ragin' Cajuns, posting at least four singles wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6. He ranked Top 5 in the Sun Belt in overall singles wins (14) and pieced together two separate six-game winning streaks throughout the spring.
Kajin and Sanchez Gonazlez were Louisiana's most formidable pairing in doubles this spring, recording a 12-6 overall mark which included a 4-2 record in Sun Belt Conference play. They finished tied for the Sun Belt lead with four victories at No. 1 doubles in conference matches.
The Ragin' Cajuns' doubles duo closed the regular season winning seven of their last 10 matchups. Their highlight wins came in matches against UTSA, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas Tech, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern and Troy.
No. 60 Louisiana and the remainder of the Sun Belt Conference men's tennis programs are set to compete for the conference tournament title and NCAA Tournament automatic bid from April 14-16 at the Peachtree City Tennis Center in Peachtree City, Ga.
The Ragin' Cajuns, seeded No. 3 in the SBC Tournament, begin play in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, April 14 meeting No. 6 seed UT Arlington in a 1:00 p.m. (CDT) match live on ESPN+.
