Louisiana Men’s Basketball Resumes Action Against Little Rock Thursday

2/3/2022 1:34:00 PM | Men's Basketball

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Men's Basketball resumes action at 6:30 p.m. Thursday when it travels to Little Rock, Ark. to face the Trojans.

It is the first time the two teams have met this season as an earlier matchup scheduled for Jan. 8 in Lafayette, La. was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols surrounding the Little Rock program.

The Ragin' Cajuns (9-10, 4-5 SBC) are looking to snap a three-game skid as they enter the final month of regular season play.

Second-year guard Kentrell Garnett and redshirt-freshman forward Kobe Julien will look to continue their dynamic play after leading the team in last week's conference matchups. Garnett scored a career-high 17 points against Georgia State last Thursday while Julien led Louisiana with 19 points against Georgia Southern on Saturday.

Bob Marlin's squad has displayed an inside-out style of offense this season with the pairing of sophomore Jordan Brown and the reigning Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year Theo Akwuba.

Brown leads the team with 14.5 points per game this season while Akwuba has continued his around-the-basket defensive prowess with 1.8 blocks per contest.

Led by the duo, Louisiana ranks second in the conference with 39.4 rebounds per game.

Little Rock enters the home contest with a 7-11 record including a 2-4 mark against conference opponents. The Trojans are led by senior forward Nikola Maric who averages 14.6 points and 6.4 rebounds this season.

SERIES NOTES
Thursday will mark the 60th meeting between the two programs as Louisiana leads the all-time series 33-26. The Ragin' Cajuns hold a 16-12 record in Little Rock.

NATIONAL NAME
On Jan. 12, Brown was named to the Lou Henson Award Midseason Watch List that honors the country's top mid-major player.

LOUISIANA LEGACY
Louisiana's 2021-22 roster features two second-generation talents in Julien and Brown. Julien's father Wayne was with the program from 1976-81 and was a member of 1977 Southland Conference championship team.

Dion Brown lettered for the Ragin' Cajuns from 1980-84 and finished his career as one of the top scorers and rebounders in school history. Brown, a 1984 graduate of UL, earned All-Southland Conference honors in 1982 and was a two-time All-Louisiana selection.

He finished his career with 1,412 points and 926 rebounds (then second in school history) and helped then-USL to the championship of the 1982 Great Alaskan Shootout where he was named to the All-Tournament team.
