Louisiana Secures Spot in H-E-B Tournament of Champions Title Match

Key third set wins vault Ragin' Cajuns past ETSU and to eighth straight victory
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Third-set triumphs by Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez and Oriol Fillat Gimenez clinched a 4-3 win for the 41st-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team over East Tennessee State on Friday, Feb. 18 at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions held at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.
The win, which followed up a 4-1 victory over Abilene Christian from earlier in the day, sends Louisiana (9-1) to the tournament's championship match on Saturday, Feb. 19 against the winner of Friday evening's UTSA-Troy contest.
It was the eighth consecutive win for the Ragin' Cajuns, extending a win streak which began back on Jan. 28 at Cajun Courts. Louisiana's strong start under the guidance of first-year head coach Luc Godin is the program's best record through 10 matches since the turn of the century, besting 8-2 starts in 2017, 2019 and 2020.
After dropping the doubles point, Louisiana got on the board with Karlo Kajin's 6-3, 6-3 win on Court 1 and gained the lead after Vasil Dimitrov's 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 on Court 6. ETSU (3-4) picked up wins on Courts 4 and 5 to reclaim the advantage.
The Ragin' Cajuns would counter with wins on the last two courts in action, starting with Sanchez Gonzalez completing the comeback after a first-set loss - improving to 6-2 on the season at No. 2 singles - to even the match at 3-all. Moments later it was Fillat Gimenez, who is now 8-1 in singles, rebounding from a second-set loss to capture the third set, ending the match in Louisiana's favor and extending his personal win streak to seven games.
