Tigers offense sparks big surge in Sunday matinee on the plains
AUBURN, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team had its season-high, four-game win streak snapped on Sunday, December 11 at Neville Arena in Auburn, Alabama as the host-Tigers used a sharpshooting second half to pull away for an 81-41 victory.
Auburn (7-2) shot 71 percent (15-of-21) after the break which included a 7-of-11 showing (63 percent) from three-point range to expand its 36-22 halftime advantage. The effects of the efficiency showed immediately as runs of 10-0 and 11-0 quickly grew the lead to 57-25 before the third quarter expired.
The Ragin' Cajuns (5-5) would force the Tigers into 23 turnovers in the contest, including 13 in the first half to keep the squad within striking distance. Shooting troubles (7-of-26 FG, 8-of-18 FT) and a Tigers defense that blocked six shots in the opening stanza was all the kept Louisiana from closing in before the second half breakaway.
All six of the Auburn blocks in the first half occurred in the opening quarter and helped the hosts preserve the lead. Despite the disruption, the Ragin' Cajuns lowered their deficit to 12-7 after a Lanay Wheaton basket at 2:10.
A buzzer-beating three-pointer to end the first quarter and triple to open the scoring in the second quarter moved the Tigers' advantage into double figures at 21-9 with 8:50 to play in the first half.
Trailing by 15 coming out of a timeout at the 7:12 mark, Louisiana made a quick push to pull Auburn closer as Tamera Johnson completed an and-one opportunity and Nubia Benedith collected a steal that led to a layup that cut the Tigers' lead to 26-16 by the 6:28 mark.
The Ragin' Cajuns defense held Auburn without a field goal make well inside of four minutes, remaining within the 10-point range.
The Tigers, though, would get a pair of inside baskets from Mar'shaun Bostic between 3:15 and 2:34 to extend the lead to 33-17 and took momentum into halftime when Honesty Scott-Grayson delivered the team's second buzzer beater of the afternoon.
In the decisive third quarter Auburn shot 7-of-10 from the floor (4-of-6 three-pointers), picked up three more blocks and limited Louisiana to a single field goal (1-of-13 shooting) in creating the 21-3 scoring disparity that sealed the win.
