Ragin' Cajuns in fifth after 18 holes; second round begins Monday at 7:40 a.m.
GLADEWATER, Texas – Freshman Malan Potgieter carded a 1-under-par 71 and Eli Ortego posted an even-par 72 to lead the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team during the opening day of the Tempest Intercollegiate on Sunday at Tempest Golf Club.
Louisiana finished in a tie for fifth place after the first 18 holes of the 54-hole event at 6-over 294 with Potgieter and Ortego each among the top-15 in the overall standings.
Play will resume with the second round on Monday at 7:40 a.m. Louisiana, which will be paired with Houston Christian, Nicholls and UT Rio Grande Valley, will start its round at 8:40 a.m. Live results are available at GolfStat.com.
Potgieter posted three of his four birdies on the day on the front nine and was 2-under-34 at the turn. The freshman, who finished tied for seventh after the first round, moved to 3-under after a birdie at No. 13 before posting a bogey on both No. 14 and 15.
Ortego tied his season-low round for the Ragin' Cajuns after he posted four birdies and recorded an eagle at the par-5, 584-yard No. 13 to finish tied for 13th after the opening 18 holes.
Burke Alford carded a 3-over-75 for Louisiana with Jake Marler posting a 4-over 76 and Charlie Flynn a 77. Freshman Maximilian Feistmantl, making his collegiate debut for Louisiana and playing as an individual, posted a 79.
Rice, led by individual leader Raghav Chugh's 5-under-67, claimed the first-day lead with a team score of 7-under 281. South Alabama (285), host Texas State (286), Stephen F. Austin (290), Houston Christian (294) and Louisiana (294) rounded the top 5 in the 11-team field.
