Louisiana Overwhelms Old Dominion and Completes Series Sweep

Ragin’ Cajuns finish off emphatic sweep with double-digit margins in final two sets

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team picked up where it left off in the series opener with Old Dominion, coming back with three convincing set victories on Friday night at Earl K. Long Gym in posting a commanding 3-0 (25-19, 25-10, 25-13) triumph.

Once Louisiana (11-8, 5-5 Sun Belt) worked through a pair of lead changes and four tied scores in the opening set the squad never trailed the rest of the evening in completing the series sweep of ODU (8-13, 3-5 Sun Belt).

The Ragin' Cajuns formula for success was another superb effort from the service line, finishing with 10 aces, and a defense that pressured the Monarchs into 19 attack errors and a paltry .100 hitting percentage.

Louisiana's offense was quick to jump on ODU's misfortune and overwhelmed the visitor's defense with 34 kills on just 79 total attempts. The Ragin' Cajuns .329 hitting percentage was led by the duo of Kara Barnes and Celeste Darling who accounted for 18 kills on a combined 29 swings.

It was an ace from Lauryn Hill that created the final lead change of the match, pulling Louisiana ahead 6-5 in Set 1. The lead was in a safe zone when four Monarchs miscues – a pair of attack errors and reception errors – came during a 5-0 run that pushed the Ragin' Cajuns advantage to 14-7.

ODU's lone push of the contest came later in the frame when a Myah Conway kill lowered Louisiana's edge to 23-18, but Barnes came up with a kill for the final two side outs.

Barnes powered down a kill and had a hand in back-to-back blocks as the Ragin' Cajuns raced out to a 6-1 lead in Set 2. Conway gave ODU a side out with a kill, then Barnes answered and the lead was no less than five points the rest of the stanza.

Louisiana's lead moved into double figures to stay after a Coco Gillett kill made it 15-5 and grew as large as 16 points, at 24-8, when Barnes posted a solo stuff and Hill followed with a kill.

The Ragin' Cajuns were off and running with the lead again in Set 3 using a string of kills from Gillett, Darling and Barnes then an ace (from Gillett) for a quick 4-0 lead and never looked back.

Adding in the three straight sets won to close Thursday's four-set victory, Louisiana exited the weekend with a streak of six consecutive sets won.

LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Barnes topped the charts with 10 kills and four blocks. Darling was extremely efficient as she landed eight kills, without error, off of 11 swings (.727 hitting percentage).

Hill provided six kills and Gillett had five of her own for the other key portion of the distribution in Louisiana's 34-27 advantage over ODU in the category.

The Ragin' Cajuns had four players with multiple aces led by three from Reka Kotorman as the squad total double digits (10) for the second straight night and closed the series with 22 aces over seven sets. There were five aces – from five different individuals – alone in Set 2.

Siena DeCambra led the group effort on defense with a match-high nine digs. There were eight different Ragin' Cajuns who rounded up multiple digs.
