LAFAYETTE – Redshirt-freshman forward Kobe Julien's team-high 19 points was not enough for Louisiana Men's Basketball to overtake Georgia Southern on Saturday night as the Ragin' Cajuns fell, 66-65 at the Cajundome.
In addition to his scoring tally, Julien grabbed five boards and dished an assist in the contest.
Inserted into the starting lineup for the third straight game, senior forward Dou Gueye contributed 13 points and a team-high six rebounds. Gueye scored 11 of his points in the second half.
After recording just one point in the opening 20 minutes, sophomore Jordan Brown went on a personal nine-point run to finish the night with 10 in the scoring column.
The two teams held each other in check through the early minutes of action. Julien through down a fastbreak dunk to even the scoring at 13-13 with just over 10 minutes elapsed.
Sparked by a 3-pointer from freshman Joe Charles and punctuated with a triple from second-year guard Kentrell Garnett, Louisiana found the first separation of the game with a 10-0 run. The offensive burst gave the Ragin' Cajuns a 23-15 lead with just over six minutes remaining.
The advantage was short-lived as Georgia Southern answered with a 15-2 run of its own and took a 32-29 lead into the halftime break.
The Eagles clung to a slim advantage through the opening portion of the second half. A second-chance layup by Brown near the 12-minute mark began his scoring run that gave Louisiana a 48-44 lead at the halfway point.
Georgia Southern converted five shots at the foul line as part of a 7-0 response run and regained a three-point lead with eight minutes to go.
Needing a spark, Garnett drained a 3-pointer that served as the catalyst for a 16-5 Louisiana run. Julien also connected from behind the arc and threw down a dunk on a baseline drive to hand Louisiana the momentum and an eight-point lead with just three minutes remaining.
Despite the advantage, in the final minutes the Ragin' Cajuns failed to convert chances at the line as the Eagles found some late-game rhythm and put the contest away with a final 10-1 run.
Louisiana will return to action at 6:30 p.m. Thursday when it travels to Little Rock to take on the Trojans. The contest will be available to be live-streamed on ESPN+.
