Daigle Sets School Record in Louisiana Track and Field's 2022 Season Opener

LAFAYETTE – Sophomore Sophie Daigle's school record in the women's 5k headlined the season-opening performances by Louisiana Track and Field at the Ted Nelson Invitational in College Station, Texas.
Daigle's program-best time came on Friday night as the Donaldsonville, La. native ran away from the competition and crossed the finish line in 16:58.55. The sub 17 second time broke the previous fastest run of 17:40.08 by Ashley Irwin in 2015.
Freshmen Taylor Davis and Ariel Young continued the highlights on the women's side as the pair earned a one-two finish in the triple jump. Davis recorded an event-long jump of 11.74m while Young followed closely behind with a mark of 11.58m.
Davis also earned a top-five finish in the high jump as the Benton, La. native posted a fourth-best jump height of 1.68m.
The Ragin' Cajuns 4x400m relay team picked up right where they left off after a strong season a year ago and claimed third place in the meet with a time of 3:50.85. Louisiana came in behind meet host Texas A&M and Stephen F. Austin.
The final top-five performance from the women's team was delivered by freshaman Cammi Martinez who tied for fifth in the pole vault after clearing 11-81/2.
On the men's side, sophomore's Ryan Theyard and John Joseph highlighted a string of impressive performances as they placed second and fourth respectively in the triple jump with lengths of 15.07m and 14.67m.
Joseph also placed fifth in the long jump with a jump length of 6.99m.
Juniors Yves Cherubin and Chandler Mixon each snuck into the top five of the final 60m hurdles leaderboard. Yves claimed fourth with a time of 8.01 seconds while Mixon finished fifth in 8.17.
Junior Mathew Standbridge rounded out the Ragin' Cajuns' top performances taking fourth in the pole vault after clearing 16-71/2.
Louisiana will be back in action next weekend when the team travels to Houston, Texas to compete in the FasTrak Collegiate Challenge.
