Louisiana Cruises to a 7-2 Victory Over Louisiana Tech

CJ Willis ties the program’s single-game doubles record with three

LAFAYETTE - On a brisk Tuesday night at M.L. 'Tigue' Moore Field at Russo Park, Louisiana cruised past Louisiana Tech for the second time this season, beating the Bulldogs, 7-2.

CJ Willis had an incredible game at the plate, tying the program's single-game doubles record with three. He is the first player since Kyle Clement (April 19, 2016) to hit three doubles in the same game.

Ben Fitzgerald was also effective for the Cajuns, reaching base three times for the second-straight contest.

Sam Riola led the team in RBI on the night, adding a two-run single to right field, scoring Willis and Drake Osborn in the second inning.

Louisiana (7-2) was the first to score during the game on a Fitzgerald RBI-single to right field that scored Tyler Robertson.

Louisiana Tech (4-3) responded by adding a run in the top of the second inning from a Jorge Corona RBI-single off starting pitcher Connor Cooke (1-2).

The run in the second inning was all Cooke gave up on the night. The sophomore right-handed pitcher tossed in a season-high five innings and fanned five batters en route to his first win of the season.

Following Louisiana Tech tying the game in the second inning, it was all Ragin' Cajuns.

Louisiana tagged Tuesday's losing pitcher Kyle Griffen (0-1) for five runs, two of which came on the Riola RBI-single, one on Connor Kimple scoring on a fielder's choice and Willis hitting an RBI-double.

The Ragin' Cajuns added to their lead on a wild pitch and an RBI-double from Robertson in the sixth and seventh inning, which made the game 5-1 after six frames and 6-2 after seven innings.

Louisiana's bullpen efforts were great as well, holding the Bulldogs to one run in four innings of relief. Jason Nelson finished the game for Louisiana by throwing 1.2 innings of shutout baseball and extending his streak of not surrendering an earned run to 5.2 innings.

Louisiana will be back in action on Wednesday night when it travels to McNeese State for its first away game since Feb. 21.
