Ragin’ Cajuns looking for first home win over Lady Mavs since 2016
LAFAYETTE – The top two teams in the Sun Belt Conference West Division will square off on Monday afternoon when Louisiana and UT Arlington play in the CAJUNDOME. Tipoff for the highly-anticipated affair is slated for 4 p.m. CT.
Riding an eight-game winning streak, the Ragin' Cajuns (9-5, 8-1 Sun Belt) currently hold a half-game lead over the Lady Mavs in the league standings entering the contest, which was originally slated to be a two-game series on Jan. 15-16 before being postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the Lady Mavs' program.
The eight consecutive wins marks the longest-ever winning in streak during conference play in program history and is the longest overall string of wins since the 2005-06 season. With a win on Monday, the team can lock up a nine-game winning streak for the first time since the 1987-88 campaign.
Louisiana added two wins over the weekend, completing the season sweep of Arkansas State with a 52-49 victory on Friday night and 73-61 come-from-behind win on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Skyler Goodwin was integral in the team's success over the two-game stretch, averaging 18.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in both games. Her weekend was highlighted by a 24-point performance on Saturday, the highest point output by a Ragin' Cajun this season.
Goodwin currently leads the team in scoring with 11.9 points per game, while Brandi Williams (11.4 ppg) and Ty'Reona Doucet (10.8 ppg) are also contributing in double figures.
UT Arlington (10-4, 8-2 Sun Belt) enters the weekend owning a four-game winning streak after a weekend sweep of ULM. The Lady Mavs are led by Shyia Smith (12.6 ppg) and Bre Wickware (12.4 ppg).
The two teams will be meeting for the 27th time, with Louisiana leading the all-time series. The Cajuns will also be looking for their first win at home over Lady Mavs since they won, 63-52 in the CAJUNDOME on Jan. 30, 2016.
