Second Round Surge Carries Louisiana To Lead In Hawaii

Four players in top-12 as Louisiana wraps up fall portion of 2021-22 schedule
EWA BEACH, Hawaii – Charlie Flynn and freshman Eli Ortego each recorded rounds of 4-under-par 68 and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team used a strong second round to claim the overall lead after the first day of the Hoakalei CC Invitational on Monday at Hoakalei Country Club.

Louisiana, which posted a team score of 10-under par 278 in the afternoon round, finished at 9-under 567 after 36 holes and two strokes ahead of Loyola Marymount heading into Tuesday's final round.

The Ragin' Cajuns, who placed four golfers in the top 12 in the 79-player field, tied the fourth lowest round versus par (10-under 278) in school history with its low round equaling their lowest since the first round of the 2020 All-American while tying for the ninth-best 36-hole score (567) in school history.

Louisiana and LMU (569) were followed in the field by San Diego (575) – ranked No. 66 in the GolfStat national rankings – with Cal State Fullerton (576) in fourth and first-round leader Utah Valley (580) fifth.

The Ragin' Cajuns opened the day with a 1-over 589 in the morning round before swapping places with UVU in the afternoon. Hinnant led the way for Louisiana in the opening round posting a 2-under par 70 with Dubinski carding an even-par 72.

Hinnant and Flynn each posted 36-hole scores of 3-under 141 to lead the Ragin' Cajuns and finish tied for sixth with Ortego (74-68-142) tied for eighth overall and Dubinski (72-71-143) tied for 12th.

Ortego opened the second round at No. 9 with an eagle and added six birdies to notch his first round in the 60's at the collegiate level. Flynn reeled off three straight birdies, beginning at No. 9 for Louisiana, before adding five more birdies to close out the day.

Hinnant posted a bogey-free score on the back nine in the afternoon picking up birdies at No. 12, 15 and 18 for Louisiana while Dubinski had a pair of birdies on the back nine to post a 2-under 34 at the turn.

Freshman Burke Alford, making his collegiate debut, overcame some early nerves on the back nine in the opening round with four birdies on the front nine to post a 4-over 76. Alford added a 79 in the second round to finish at 155 through the first day.

Tony Hendricks of LMU posted rounds of 65 and 70 to finish at 9-under 135 after the first day and claim a three-stroke lead over Garrett Boe of Cal State Fullerton.
