LAFAYETTE - In this Q&A feature article, you will get to "Kneaux" men's tennis' Oriol Fillat Gimenez. The freshman highlights a very talented recruiting class that head coach Mark Jeffrey has welcomed to the program.
1. Where are you from and how did you first hear about the University of Louisiana?
I am from Vilassar de Mar, a town 20 miles from Barcelona, Spain. The first time I heard about the University of Louisiana was last October when coach Jeffrey contacted me. I had good impressions.
2. How many family members do you have, and how have they played a role in you getting to Louisiana?
My family helped a lot in the process, especially my parents. My mother, Marta Gimenez, and my father, Albert Fillat, helped me a lot in everything, paperwork, calls, embassy issues.
3. What is the typical food from your region?
In Spain, we have a very nice gastronomy. Normally, we can find Mediterranean food. A typical food from my region is Iberia ham, paella, "tapas" and also good meat and fish.
4. What is your favorite thing to do away from the tennis courts?
I am a person who loves sports. Away from the tennis courts, I like to practice other sports like soccer, volleyball and go to gym. I like to hang out with friends and watch movies.
5. What is the most difficult thing to adapt to while here in Louisiana?
I think I have adapted very well. The first two weeks were a little tough because we were in quarantine. The weather could be an issue for some players, but I really enjoy to play with warm weather and high humidity.
6. What is the outlook for you and the men's tennis team this year?
In my opinion, we have a very good team, a compensated team from all positions. I think this year we can have a very good season and our goal should be win the conference and go as high as we can in rankings.
7. What are some expectations for yourself this tennis season?
I chose college tennis because I have a lot to learn. I have a background level from Spain and I want to improve my aggressive game, and here is the best place to do it. My expectations are high, I want to improve a lot and I want to earn some good results with the team and also in individual tournaments.
