Ragin’ Cajuns withstand challenge from Lamar with another impressive effort on offense

LAFAYETTE – The season-opening winning streak for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team remained intact following a 3-0 (25-15, 27-25, 25-14) win over Lamar in the first contest of a Saturday doubleheader at Earl K. Long Gym.

With the sweep the Ragin' Cajuns moved to 5-0, continuing the program's best start since the 2014 team won its first 10 matches.

The serve of Hannah Ramirez and Kelsey Bennett set Louisiana free from Lamar (0-4) in the opening frame. Ramirez served up three straight winners to open a 7-3 edge, then later on at 17-13 the Ragin' Cajuns claimed five straight rallies off of Bennett's serve to clinch the victory.

The intensity picked up on both sides in the second set which featured a combined 115 attacks and 61 digs. The Ragin' Cajuns battled through 10 ties and five lead changes before Bennett killed an overpass for the squad's first lead in extra points at 26-25, then Kara Barnes and Taylor Gates combined for a block on the ensuing rally to secure set point.

The back-and-forth play carried over to the early stages of the third stanza, until Gates landed a kill to snap a 9-all tie. From there the Ragin' Cajuns rolled out a 15-5 run that ended the match.

The sweep also extended Louisiana's streak of consecutive sets won to 12 straight which began following an opening-set loss to Houston Baptist on Sept. 5.

LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Hali Wisnoskie claimed match-high honors once again with 15 kills on a .325 hitting percentage. Bennett joined her in leading the charge, landing a season-high 13 kills off 29 swings at a .414 clip.

For Wisnoskie it marked a 16th consecutive match with double figures in kills, a streak which dates back to last Oct. 18.

Tia Jade Smith and Gates each contributed seven kills. Smith was unstoppable in carrying Louisiana to the finish line, as she scored five kills off six swings in the third set.

Barnes led the way with four blocks. Smith and Gates also had multiple blocks.

Ramirez rounded up a match-high 18 digs which extended her active streak of matches with double digits to 17 straight and inched her closer to reaching the 100-dig mark for the season (now at 84).

Bennett also reached double digits in digs, collecting 15 which resulted in her first double-double of the season.

Avery Breaux steered the offense to a third consecutive match with a .300-plus hitting percentage by handing out an impressive 14 assists per set.
