Ragin’ Cajuns looking to sweep the season series over the Panthers
LAFAYETTE – Looking to get back on track after dropping a pair of games last week, Louisiana Women's Basketball resumes its three-game homestand on Thursday, Feb. 13, when it welcomes Georgia State to the Cajundome. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.
Â
Having already faced off earlier this season, the Ragin' Cajuns (13-9, 6-5 SBC) are seeking the season sweep over the Panthers with a victory. The first meeting came on Jan. 2 in Atlanta, which Louisiana won, 75-65.
Â
Junior Jomyra Mathis led the way in the January showdown, pacing four players in double figures with 14 points to help lead the team to its first win in a Sun Belt Conference opener since 2015.
Â
Louisiana enters Thursday's contest with a 4-1 record all-time against Georgia State in Lafayette, while the win earlier this year gave the Ragin' Cajuns a 10-3 advantage in the all-time series.
Â
In the team's most recent outing, Louisiana could not get a last second shot to fall and fell to Troy in the Cajundome, 67-64, on Saturday, Feb. 8. Sophomore Andrea Cournoyer led the team in scoring for the first time this season with 16 points, while Brandi Williams (15) and Ty'Reona Doucet (10) also scored in double figures.
Â
Doucet continues to be the team's leading scorer (12.9) and rebounder (7.6), while Williams is averaging 12.3 points per contest and leads the team in scoring at home with 10.7 points a game.
Â
Georgia State has come on as of late and has won its last two ballgames after picking up victories over Arkansas State and Little Rock in Atlanta and enters Thursday's contest with a 6-16 overall record and a 3-8 mark in league play.
Â
In its most recent victory over Little Rock, the Panthers were impressive in the 58-43 triumph over the Trojans. Taylor Hosendove was one of four Panthers to score in double figures, leading the team with a career-high 23 points, nine boards, three blocks and two steals. Moriah Taylor, Taylor Henderson and Tehya Lyons all added 10 points.
Hosendove (11.7), Jada Lewis (10.5) and Henderson (10.1) are all averaging in double figures for Georgia State this season, with Hosendove also leading the team on the glass, averaging 8.8 rebounds.
Â
Thursday's game will be Hoops for Troops and Superhero Night. Military members and their families will receive complimentary admission to the game and will receive a voucher for free popcorn, drink and hot dog.
Â
Kids who dress like a superhero will also receive free admission to the game and will have the opportunity to make superhero mask and write cards to first responders and military members.
