Ragin’ Cajuns looking for first over the Owls since 1981
LAFAYETTE – Coming off a hard-fought defeat against in-state foe Louisiana State, Louisiana continues its three-game, non-conference road swing in Houston when it faces Rice for the first time since Jan. 4, 1999. Tipoff from Tudor Fieldhouse is slated for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on CUSA.tv.
With a win on Tuesday afternoon, the Ragin' Cajuns (1-2) will lock up their first victory over the Owls since Jan. 10, 1981, snapping a four-game losing streak in the process.
The action-packed week began on Monday evening when the team traveled to Baton Rouge, where it dropped a highly-contested battle against Louisiana State by a score of 62-57. Brandi Williams led the team with 16 points, while Ty'Reona Docuet notched her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Doucet leads the team in scoring through three games with an average of 12.7 points per contest, while Williams is right on her heels at 12.3 points per contest. Sophomore Makayia Hallmon, who opened the campaign with back-to-back double-figure performances, ranks third in scoring with 11.3 points a game.
Rice (3-0) has gotten its season off to a great start with wins against Houston Baptist, Little Rock and Texas Tech. Four Owls are average double-figure scoring, paced by 13.3 points from Nancy Mulkey, who also boasts 10.0 boards a contest.
The game will be the eighth meeting between the two programs all-time, with Rice leading the series 4-3. It will be the first meeting between the schools in the Garry Brodhead era.
