Ragin’ Cajuns find the right string of points to sweep Warhawks in series opener
LAFAYETTE – Throughout the night the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team collected points when it needed them the most and the result was a straight sets sweep (25-21, 25-17, 25-18) win over ULM on Friday evening at Earl K. Long Gym.
The Ragin' Cajuns (14-4, 8-4 Sun Belt) recovered from identical 10-6 deficits in the first and second set and scored the final six points of the third stanza to fend off a Warhawks rally and attempt to extend the match.
Louisiana pressured ULM (1-16, 0-12 Sun Belt) into a negative hitting percentage and only eight kills per set over the final two frames, key to putting the contest away.
With the win the Ragin' Cajuns gain ground on UT Arlington (8-2 Sun Belt) in the conference standings, moving within a game of the Mavericks ahead of next weekend's series in Arlington.
Trailing 13-11 in the first set and needing a momentum shift the Ragin' Cajuns pressured the Warhawks into three attack errors during a 4-0 run that pulled the hosts out of a deficit for good. ULM rallied to force a 20-all tie, but Kelsey Bennett delivered timely kills in back-to-back fashion and Louisiana pulled away.
In the second set the Ragin' Cajuns rode the serve of Milayne Danna to a 10-all tie, and later picked up four straight points to jump ahead 14-11. ULM found a sideout, but perfectly timed kills from Kara Barnes, Hali Wisnoskie and Lauren Tishkoff followed by a block from Cami Hicks stretched the lead to a comfortable margin at 18-13.
Barnes and Wisnoskie were instrumental in distancing Louisiana from the visitors in the third set after a 15-all tie, combining for three straight kills to produce an 18-15 edge. Hicks later sealed the sweep as she had a hand in three blocks during the match-ending 6-0 run.
LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Bennett posted a match-leading 10 kills off 30 swings and a .267 hitting percentage. It was her 10th outing of double-digit kills (ninth in SBC play) this season and the total increased her season kills figure to 193 leaving her seven kills shy of a second consecutive 200-200 season of kills and digs.
Tishkoff and Wisnoskie combined for 17 additional scores, tallying nine and eight kills respectively. Wisnoskie added two service aces to her stat line, joining Bennett for the team lead in the category.
Hicks was one of four Ragin' Cajuns with multiple blocks, ending the night with a season-high five (3 BS, 2 BA). The Carthage, Texas native posted at least four blocks for the third time in the past four outings and has totaled 14 blocks during the streak.
With a strong push to the finish line, rounding up 10 digs in the third set, libero Hannah Ramirez closed the night with 15 digs to extend her streak of consecutive matches with double-digit digs to 30 straight (dates back to last Oct. 11).
With seven digs Bennett was able to push her season total to 206, giving her a second straight season of 200-plus digs.
Avery Breaux accounted for all but one of Louisiana's assists as she picked up 33 out of the squad's 34 in the match. She added six digs and a pair of blocks to her stat line.
