Ty’Reona Doucet scores 17 points in her return to the hardwood
STATESBORO, Ga. – Louisiana made some noise in the final quarter by scoring 23 points, but it could not make up a 24-point deficit in the second half as it fell to Georgia Southern, 83-67, at Hanner Fieldhouse.
It was not a lack of effort on the Ragin' Cajuns' part, which finished the day 39 percent (22-for-56) from the floor, but a matter of containing a red-hot Eagles offense that finished the game shooting 48 percent from both the field and long range.
Playing for the first time since Dec. 20 at Ole Miss, junior Ty'Reona Doucet had a big showing with a game-high 17 points on 7-for-13 shooting and pulled down a team-best six boards. Doucet was joined in double figures by Andrea Cournoyer, who finished the contest with 13 points.
Brandi Williams and Jomyra Mathis added nine points apiece in the loss and combined for 11 boards, while Skyler Goodwin scored eight points of her own.
Louisiana put together a solid first half, shooting 42 percent (10-for-24) from the floor, but it could not slow down Georgia Southern, which played lights out in all facets on offense by shooting 52 percent from the field (16-for-31), 62 percent from long range (8-for-13) and 100 percent (6-for-6) from the charity stripe to take a commanding 46-24 lead into halftime.
After the Eagles' lead hovered around 20 points for the entire third quarter, the Ragin' Cajuns made a move in the final period when Doucet hit a jumper to cut the lead to 65-51 with 7:30 to play. Three minutes later, Williams drained a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 71-59 to put the pressure on, but Georgia Southern responded with a 11-0 run over the next 3:08 to push its lead out to 81-59.
The Ragin' Cajuns finished out the final minute of the game on an 8-2 run with five points from Makayia Hallmon and four points from Cournoyer, but it was too late as the Eagles earned the 83-67 victory.
Louisiana returns to Lafayette for the first time since Dec. 16, 2019, when it welcomes South Alabama to the Cajundome for its Sun Belt Conference home opener. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
