Louisiana Volleyball Hosts Annual Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic

Tournament action takes place at Earl K. Long Gym for the second straight weekend
LAFAYETTE – For the second straight weekend Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball fans have an opportunity to catch the team in action as tournament play is once again held at Earl K. Long Gym.

The annual Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic is set for Friday-Saturday, Sept. 6-7. Louisiana welcomes Eastern Michigan, Florida A&M and McNeese for the event.

This season marks the seventh edition of the tournament which is held in memory of Sawyer Camillo, a freshman volleyball player for the Ragin' Cajuns, who passed away on Dec. 22, 2012 at her home in Argyle, Texas.

Admission is free for all tournament matches. Louisiana Athletics' fan-friendly concessions menu, highlighted by hot dogs, popcorn and potato chips available for $1 each, will be in effect.

Louisiana takes the court on Friday at 1:30 p.m. (vs. McNeese) and 6:30 p.m. (vs. Eastern Michigan). The Ragin' Cajuns close out the weekend on Saturday facing Florida A&M at 12:30 p.m.

Highlighting the list of returners is junior outside hitter Hali Wisnoskie, a two-time All-Sun Belt selection and preseason all-conference choice for 2019, who owns a pair of 300-plus kills seasons and senior middle blocker Dree'Ana Abram who has dominated at the net with back-to-back seasons of 90-plus blocks.

Other returning starters include right side hitter Desiree Johnson who appeared in every match and set during her rookie campaign and setters Avery Breaux and Milayne Danna who directed the 6-2 offense in 2018.

Tia Jade Smith, who showed she can be a force in the middle during a key two-week stretch in the second half of Sun Belt play last season, is expected to make an impact.

The Ragin' Cajuns welcome a pair of newcomers from the junior college ranks in standout libero Hannah Ramirez from Panola College along with Lafayette native Elise Baranco who returns home after one season at Pratt (Kan.) Community College.

SET POINTS
- The Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic continues a season-opening, seven-match homestand which keeps the Ragin' Cajuns at home through Sept. 10.
- Louisiana hosts McNeese for the first time since Sept. 2016, while Eastern Michigan and Florida A&M appear at Earl K. Long Gym for the first time.
- Louisiana's defense was on point in the season-opening DoubleTree Classic, out-digging foes on the weekend 170-167. The Ragin' Cajuns averaged 18.9 digs per set and scooped 50-plus each match.
- In their Ragin' Cajun debuts last weekend, freshman Celeste Darling finished tied for the team-lead with 2.25 kills/set (18 total) and JUCO transfer Hannah Ramirez collected 37 digs highlighted by a weekend-best 19 vs. Tulane.
- Junior outside hitter Hali Wisnoskie enters the weekend 18 kills shy of her 700th career tally. Wisnoskie has been Louisiana's leader in kills per set the past two seasons.
- With 18 kills in last week's DoubleTree Classic, senior middle blocker Dree'Ana Abram surpassed 500 career kills.
- The Ragin' Cajuns seek to improve upon last weekend's hitting percentage and limit the amount of attack errors. Louisiana hit .099 and committed 62 attack errors in The DoubleTree Classic.
- Louisiana utilized both the 5-1 (ran by Avery Breaux) and 6-2 (ran by Breaux and Gemma Cantone) system during season-opening weekend.
- Milayne Danna and Hannah Ramirez took turns wearing the libero jersey last weekend as Louisiana seeks to replace departed four-year starter Sydney Davis.
