Louisiana Drops Heartbreaker at UTA, 9-8

The Ragin’ Cajuns allowed five unanswered runs in the final two innings

For just the third time this season, the Ragin' Cajuns (20-21, 8-8) fell in a game in which they were leading after eight frames.
Â
Junior Todd Lott had a huge night, going 4-for-5 at the plate with four RBI. One of those hits was a two-run shot, his fifth deep ball of the season and the team's 43rd on the year. Lott became the first member of the team to record four hits in a game since Hayden Cantrelle did so on March 19 against Northwestern State.

Cantrelle also had a big night, producing three hits, scoring two runs and adding an RBI, while Brennan Breaux, Jordan Wiley and Daniel Lahare each added two hits.

Senior Gunner Leger (1-3) took the loss, giving up five runs, four of which were earned, in 2.0 innings of work.

Lott and Kasuls got things going early for Louisiana, putting two balls in play in the opening frame to put the Ragin' Cajuns ahead, 2-0, before Breaux pushed a third run home in the second with a sac bunt to extend the advantage.

UTA (26-3, 12-4) answered with two RBI singles to center field in the bottom of the second to tie the game and took the at 4-3 with a double in the fourth.

Lott came up big once again in the fifth inning, launching a two-run bomb over the left-field wall to shoot Louisiana back into the lead, 5-4. In the eighth, the team added three insurance runs on two singles and a groundout to put itself in prime position for the win.

However, UTA produced five unanswered runs in the bottom of the final two innings, including the game-winning single off the bat of Zac Cook, to steal the game away with a 9-8 victory.
