SETTING THE SCENE
A three-week road trip ends and Sun Belt Conference play begins when No. 11 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball visits Texas State. The three-game series at Bobcat Softball Stadium in San Marcos, Texas runs Friday-Sunday, March 8-10.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns (15-3, 0-0 Sun Belt) and Bobcats (9-11, 0-0 Sun Belt) meet in three single games, a change to the conference's weekend series format which debuts this season.
Â
The series begins Friday at 6 p.m., continues Saturday at 2 p.m., and concludes Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
Â
Louisiana embarks on the 19th season of regular season competition in the Sun Belt. It's the first time Texas State is the opposition for the league-opening series.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns are coming off a Top 25 split last weekend at the Oklahoma Courtyard Marriott Tournament against Oregon State and the host-Sooners. That moved the squad to 4-3 on the present road trip.
Â
The series features the two programs who have met for the Sun Belt Tournament title the past three seasons. The 2019 league championship event will be held in San Marcos.
Â
Louisiana has an active streak of 46 consecutive Sun Belt Conference series won (school and SBC record streak). The streak spans the previous five-plus seasons, dating back to a March 2013 sweep of FIU.
Â
A QUICK LOOK AT THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Infield: Louisiana is anchored on the left side by two of the best infielders in the country in senior third baseman Kara Gremillion and junior shortstop Alissa Dalton – both career .950-plus fielders. Returning starting second baseman Casidy Chaumont has resumed her spot with Keeli Milligan sliding in occasionally depending upon matchups. At first base, returning starter Kourtney Gremillion and Toledo transfer Bailey Curry rotate at the position.
Â
Outfield: Expected to make a significant impact are Texas A&M transfers Keeli Milligan (left field) and Sarah Hudek (right field). Texas Tech transfer Raina O'Neal, who sat out due to transfer rules in 2018, is making her Louisiana debut in center field. Aeriyl Mass provides a boost with her speed and should see time in various outfield positions as a defensive replacement. Jolie Readeaux and Julie Rawls could see time in the outfield depending on matchups.
Â
Pitchers: Preseason Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year Summer Ellyson is back as Louisiana's lead pitcher. Ellyson was a 20-game winner and ranked Top 40 nationally in all major pitching categories in 2018. Sophomore Carrie Boswell and freshman Kandra Lamb of Australia have been the first out of the bullpen and starters when Ellyson rests. Fifth-year senior Alison Deville and sophomore Casey Dixon add additional depth behind Ellyson.
Â
Catchers: Senior Lexie Comeaux and Northwestern State transfer Julie Rawls, converted to the position from the outfield, serve as the Ragin' Cajuns' main catchers. Comeaux fills the designated player role, and plays in the outfield, in order to keep her bat in the game, as Rawls has seen plenty playing time early in order to continue her development.

NOTABLE STREAKS AND TRENDS
- The 2019 season marks the 39th season overall in Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball history and the second season of the Gerry Glasco era.
- Louisiana's season-opening, 14-game winning streak marked the program's best start since the 2015 season, matching that team's start.
- For the third straight week, the Ragin' Cajuns remain in the Top 15 of the national polls. Louisiana checks in at No. 11 (NFCA) and No. 12 (USA Softball) this week.
- The Ragin' Cajuns boast one of the nation's top offenses, ranking Top 10 in scoring (8.17), average (.358), stolen bases per game (3.83), slugging percentage (.594) and on base percentage (.451).
- Louisiana has launched 21 home runs representing a strong start to the expected exponential rise in power numbers from a year ago (23 HR in 57 games in 2018).
- The Ragin' Cajuns have started fast in 2019, scoring in the first inning nine times and being the first to light up the scoreboard in 12 of 18 outings.
- Sarah Hudek raised her average above .400 after finishing 5-for-5 at the plate at the Oklahoma Tournament. The two doubles vs. Oregon State marked the third time in six games she produced multiple doubles.
- Summer Ellyson has steered Louisiana's efforts in the pitching circle collecting nine victories over the first four weeks (9-3, 1.55 ERA). She ranks Top 10 nationally in the category.
- Summer Ellyson has been proficient in the circle needing less than 100 pitches to net the result in her first five complete game efforts of seven innings. Only once has she surpassed 100 pitches (extra innings at Baylor).
- Alissa Dalton is meeting her preseason goal of driving in runners in scoring position, as her 19 RBI leads a group of seven Ragin' Cajuns who have already reached double figures.
- Bailey Curry has carried a .400-plus average since opening weekend and has reached base in 31 of 53 plate appearances. She leads the team with 12 walks and a .585 on base percentage.
- The Ragin' Cajuns have been active on the base path, swiping 69 stolen bases in 75 attempts. The total ranked second nationally entering the week.
- Keeli Milligan is the main weapon on the base path with 24 stolen bases in as many attempts. She ranks second nationally on the individual charts and is on pace to threaten the Ragin' Cajuns single-season record of 51 established by Dorsey Steamer in 1992.
- From top to bottom in the lineup, Louisiana provides a formidable challenge for opposing pitchers. Presently, there are seven starters hitting .330 or higher, possessing double-digit RBI totals and have hit at least one home run.
- Pitchers Carrie Boswell and Kandra Lamb have seen the bulk of the innings when Summer Ellyson has rested. Boswell owns three scoreless relief efforts, while Lamb has notched 27 strikeouts and surrendered only seven hits in 22-2/3 innings of work.
