@RaginCajunsMT Snags A Pair Of Wins, Clinches Spot In HEB Tournament Of Champions Final

2/22/2019 9:57:00 PM | Men's Tennis

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Led by freshman Jan Galka getting a win in singles over a nationally ranked opponent and a dominating team win in the first match of the day, Louisiana Men's Tennis (13-3) took down DePaul, 4-0, and earned an extremely competitive 4-3 win over UTSA, to open the 53rd HEB Tournament of Champions to clinch a spot in the final, set to be played on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 10:30 a.m.

Galka's win over UTSA's Kai Breitbach, ranked No. 119 in the nation, was just the icing on the cake in a day where he went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles to finish the day 4-0.  Junior Jamie Fraser went 2-0 overall, 1-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles, as Louisiana worked hard through the day to come away with a solid performance across all courts.

In Louisiana's hardest fought match of the day against UTSA, the clinching point came in doubles and was earned by the No. 53 duo of senior Arthur Libaud and junior Pearse Dolan's 6-3 win, punching Louisiana's ticket to the final.

HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. DePaul): Louisiana got off to a strong start in Corpus Christi, with a 4-0 win over DePaul and the dominating win began with the Ragin' Cajuns taking the doubles point.

Louisiana got the doubles point with a 6-4 win by Galka and freshman Kacper Dworak took down UTSA's Conor O'Meara and Luuk Wassenaar, followed by a 6-3 win by the Louisiana duo of Fraser and junior Elio Lago who took down the UTSA pairing of Tripp Tuff and Vito Tonejc.

The sweeping win in doubles gave Louisiana a 1-0 lead heading into singles.  At No. 1 singles, Galka took down Tonejc in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 and at No. 3 singles Libaud knocked off Christopher Casati, 6-2, 6-0.

Louisiana's final singles win came at No. 5 when Dworak got a straight-set win, 6-1, 6-2, over Tuff adding up to a 4-0 sweeping win for Louisiana in its first match of the weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. UTSA): Louisiana's second match of the day, the match started with singles and both Louisiana and UTSA each won three matches in singles.  The big win for Louisiana came at No. 1 when Galka battled through a three-set match with No. 119 Breitbach, winning 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, coming back from dropping the second set to get his first career-win over a nationally ranked opponent in singles.

At No. 2 singles Dolan got a straight-set win over Joao Ceolin, 6-4, 6-3 and Fraser, playing No. 5 singles, got himself a straight-set win 6-2, 6-2, over Patrick Poestinger to give Louisiana its three wins in singles.  UTSA's three wins in singles, forced the match to be decided in doubles, where Louisiana would lock-up the win.

Louisiana's first win in doubles came at No. 2, with Galka and Dworak getting their second win of the day as a duo in doubles, 6-3, over Breitbach and Alan Sanson putting Louisiana one win away.  At No. 1 doubles, Louisiana took care of UTSA when Dolan and Libaud clinched the day with a 6-3 win over Juri Reckow and Ceolin, giving Louisiana a 4-3 win and a spot in Saturday's finals.

UP NEXT FOR THE CAJUNS: Louisiana wraps up the weekend in the finals with a Saturday matchup against Sun Belt Conference foe Troy, with the match set to be played at 10:30 a.m. and be played on the Islanders Courts.
