LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Men's Tennis (9-2), off to its best start since the 2014 season, continues its busy spring season by hosting the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational starting on Friday, Feb. 15 through Saturday, Feb. 16 with Alcorn State (0-11), Texas A&M – Corpus Christi (7-3) and Northern Arizona (2-2) all coming into Cajun Courts for the weekend tournament.
BUSY WEEKEND AT CAJUN COURTS: Louisiana opens up the weekend with Alcorn State on Friday, with that match starting at 9 a.m. and on the same day Louisiana will face Texas A&M – Corpus Christi at 4 p.m. On Saturday, Louisiana wraps up the busy weekend at 9 a.m. when the Ragin' Cajuns take on Northern Arizona.
Friday's other matches include Northern Arizona taking on AMCC and Alcorn State and on Saturday, AMCC will face Alcorn State to wrap up the weekend of action at Cajun Courts.
STARTING LIKE IT'S 2014: Louisiana's 9-2 start, which includes a win over Power Five Nebraska, on Jan. 12 in Tallahassee, Fla., is the best start after 11 matches since the 2014 season. That season saw Louisiana finish 20-5, including a Sun Belt Conference Championship, a NCAA Tournament appearance and a final national ranking of 61.
STREAKING CAJUNS: Louisiana has had two solid winning streaks this season, with the Ragin' Cajuns bringing in a current streak of three matches heading into the weekend. Starting with its win against Nebraska on Jan. 12, Louisiana ripped off a six-match winning streak where Louisiana outscored its opponents 28-4 and the only loss during Louisiana's stretch since the match against Nebraska was a close loss against Penn State (4-3) on Jan. 26.
LOUISIANA'S STRONG LINEUP: Across Louisiana's lineup the production has been strong, which has been key to the great start for Louisiana. At No. 1 singles freshman Jan Galka has had a great start to his collegiate career, going 3-1 at No. 1 and 2-1 at No. 2 to start his career with a 5-2 record overall in singles.
In the heart of the lineup, senior Arthur Libaud has been solid for Louisiana going 7-1 overall in singles. He is 2-1 at No. 3, 2-0 at No. 4 and 2-0 at No. 5 to help lock up the middle part of Louisiana's lineup during the first 11 matches of the season.
Louisiana's driving force has been junior Jamie Fraser. Playing at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles Fraser has gong 9-0 to drive Louisiana through the first 11 matches.Â
Winning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honors on Jan. 30, he clinched the win against Nebraska and won the match that pushed Louisiana's match against Penn State to the deciding doubles point. Those wins have been big victory's for Louisiana and Fraser has been huge for the Ragin' Cajuns so far this season.
WHAT THE BRAVES BRING: Alcorn State enters the first match of the weekend having not won a match over its first 11 matches of the season. The Braves opened the season with a pair of matches at Cajun Courts against Louisiana, dropping both matches in what was Louisiana's home opening doubleheader.
WHAT THE ISLANDERS BRING: AMCC brings the best record of the three teams visiting Cajun Courts this weekend, but the Islanders have lost their previous two matches, losing to Rice, 4-0, on Feb. 8 and 4-2 to Elon University on Feb. 9 at the South Texas Showdown Presented by the NavyArmy Community Credit Union.
Since 2007 AMCC is 10-6 against Louisiana, with the Islanders taking the previous two matches and this will be the 14th straight season that Louisiana and AMCC will meet on the court and it is the third straight season AMCC will be making the trip to Lafayette, La.
WHAT THE LUMBERJACKS BRING: Northern Arizona enters the weekend having won its previous match at San Diego State, 4-3, on Feb. 10 and the Lumberjacks took their season opener against Portland in Las Vegas, Nev., 4-3 on Jan. 26. The two losses for Northern Arizona came in a doubleheader at Utah on Feb. 2, with the Lumberjacks falling 6-1 and 5-2 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The match with Louisiana will be Northern Arizona and Louisiana's final match of the weekend and it will be the first all-time meeting between the two programs.
