Ragin’ Cajuns are 2-3 all-time in Education Day contests

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana returns home for the final time in non-conference play on Monday, Dec. 16, when it welcomes the 15th-ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs to the Cajundome on Education Day.

Boasting a superb 4-0 record on its home floor this season, the team will look to earn its first win on Education Day since 2017 when it defeated Alcorn State, 67-47.

Louisiana saw its five-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, Dec. 7, when it fell on the road to North Texas, 69-66, in Denton. Brandi Williams came back in a big way after missing the Xavier (La.) game due to injury, leading the team in scoring with 18 points. Ty'Reona Doucet was the only other Ragin' Cajun to score in double figures, adding 17 points.

Despite the loss, Louisiana had its best shooting game of the season, going 27-for-59 (.458) from the floor against the Mean Green.

Mississippi State enters contest with an 8-2 overall record and a No. 15 ranking in the national polls. The Bulldogs have lost two straight games, falling to No. 1 Stanford, 67-62, in the Greater Victoria Invitational in British Columbia and to No. 22 West Virginia, 71-65, in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge at home in Starkville.

Jessika Carter leads three Bulldogs who are scoring in double figures, averaging a double-double with 14.7 points and 11.0 rebounds per contest. Jordan Danberry (13.4) and Rickea Jackson (11.6) are also scoring in double figures for the Bulldogs this year.

As a team, Mississippi State is averaging 86.8 points per game this season, the third-highest scoring average in the country this season.

Louisiana and Mississippi State will be meeting for the 12th time dating back to 1981 when the programs face off on Monday morning. Louisiana will be searching for its first win in the series as Mississippi State leads, 11-0.

Monday's game will mark the third time Mississippi State will play in Lafayette and the first since the 2014 season. The Ragin' Cajuns are 0-4 under against the Bulldogs under head coach Garry Brodhead.
