The Ragin' Cajuns played their first exhibition at Mississippi State on Saturday, Oct. 5, and walked away with a comeback 7-4 victory in the first game of the seven inning doubleheader.
Louisiana opens its 2020 season with Southeastern Louisiana at home on Friday, Feb. 14.
2019 Fall Baseball Notes
Louisiana is preparing for the 2020 campaign with 44 players on their roster, with the number of newcomers outweighing the number of returners at 23 to 21. The Ragin' Cajuns will carry 24 pitchers, 11 infielders, six outfielders and three catchers on their fall roster.
The 2020 baseball season will be a special year for the University of Louisiana under first year head coach Matt Deggs, who is taking over for legendary head coach Tony Robichaux.
While leading the Sam Houston State Bearkats, Deggs posted an outstanding record of 187-118 (.613) with Southland Conference regular season championships in three of the last four seasons. Deggs also guided the Bearkats to a Super Regional in 2017, becoming the first-ever Southland program to accomplish the feat.
Pitching Coach BJ Ryan is back with the Ragin' Cajuns, having played two years for Louisiana (1997-1998) and helping it earn its first Sun Belt Tournament Championship in 1998. Ryan also pitched 11 years in the MLB, earning All-Star appearances with the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays.
Out of the 530.2 total innings pitched in 2019, Louisiana returns 383.2 innings pitched this fall. Jacob Schultz and Austin Perrin are the returning leaders after each threw 65+ innings last season.
What Louisiana returns in pitching, it loses in hitting. The Ragin' Cajuns only have three position players with 20 or more starts returning from last year in Hayden Cantrelle, Brennan Breaux and Tremaine Spears.
Cantrelle is one of the more noteworthy players on the roster and around the Sun Belt. He was a Cape Cod League All-Star this past summer and a First Team All-Sun Belt Conference shortstop last spring. He had an incredible year at the plate, batting .309 with nine home runs and 31 RBIs. He also paced the conference in steals with 28.
The newcomers are highlighted by pitching prospects Carter Robinson and Conor Angel. Robinson, a Phoenix, Ariz., native, is a mountainous right-handed pitcher standing at 6'8 and was named the 2019 National JUCO Pitcher of the Year at Mesa CC. Angel, another tall right-hander, is coming from Northwest Florida JC and recently threw 3.0 scoreless innings at Mississippi State while touching 94 on the gun.
The newcomers to watch out for at the plate are Ben Fitzgerald, Joshua Cox and Brandon Talley. Fitzgerald has a tremendous bat and slashed .303/.412/.610, including a 1.022 OPS, at North Iowa Area College last season. Cox swings a nice bat as well, hitting .317/.401/.550 with 11 home runs and 30 steals at Butler CC. Talley is a typical left-handed 1B/OF power hitter who put up monster numbers at Grayson CC, hitting 15 home runs and driving in 76 RBI in just 55 games.
RHP Luke Cronan is from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, and his home is roughly 8,550 miles away from Lafayette. It is farthest hometown away from Lafayette on the team.
RHP David Williams is coming from major university. Williams spent time at Xavier University and touched 100 MPH on the radar gun before two major injuries.
Louisiana has three freshmen full-time arms. Those three are LHP Dax Ford, RHP Jake Combs, and RHP Justin Barnes. Ford was the No. 18 ranked player in the state of Louisiana and the No. 1 LHP according to perfectgame.org.
Louisiana has 24 juniors on their fall roster, more than the other three classes combined.
The two teams will play a regular nine-inning game, followed by three, three-inning contests starting in the seventh frame. The first of the three, three-inning games will start with the score 0-0, the second, 1-0, in favor of Tulane and the third, 1-0, in favor of Louisiana.
