Louisiana Pushes Past Arkansas State, Extends Win Streak to Four

@RaginCajunsVB captures second place in Sun Belt West with gritty win over Red Wolves

JONESBORO, Ark. – It wasn't easy, but once the offense started clicking Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball was able to put away Arkansas State by a 3-1 (26-24, 18-25, 25-21, 25-14) count Friday evening at First National Bank Arena.
 
The Ragin' Cajuns (13-15, 9-6 Sun Belt) toughed it out in a 26-24 first-set win and battled through a sub-.100 hitting percentage that carried into the third set.
 
With the match lead on the line, and trailing 17-16 in the third set, the offense started clicking led by Hali Wisnoskie who scored four kills during a 9-4 scoring spree which returned the lead to Louisiana.
 
The fourth set began with back-to-back Dree'Ana Abram kills which set the tone – the first of four kills as the Ragin' Cajuns raced out to 6-2 lead. Celeste Darling scored a couple of key kills after ASU (15-12, 6-9 Sun Belt) cut the lead to 13-11, then at 18-14 it was Wisnoskie with the kill for the first of seven consecutive points won to finish off the match.
 
Louisiana produced a match-best 12 kills and hit a match-best .320 in the clinching frame of the eighth win in the past nine matches. The defense limited the Red Wolves to a negative percentage and a sub-.100 clip for the second straight meeting.
 
With the win the Ragin' Cajuns secured second place in the Sun Belt West Division – for the second time in the past three seasons – and remained in line to capture the No. 5 seed for the conference tournament.
 
It's the first season sweep of Arkansas State since the 2013 season and third straight win over the Red Wolves (longest streak since 2000-02).
 
LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Wisnoskie tallied nine of her match-high 17 kills over the final two sets, reaching double digits in kills for the ninth straight match. The Columbus, Texas product moved her season total past 300 for the third consecutive season, joining program-great Nia Kiggundu as the only individuals in the 44-year history of the program to accomplish the feat.
 
Wisnoskie also eclipsed 200 kills in Sun Belt Conference play for the first time in her career (now at 209).  
 
Abram scored eight kills while Darling and Tia Jade Smith added six apiece.
 
Darling and Smith led on the front line with three blocks each. Kelsey Bennett led a group of four Ragin' Cajuns to reach double figures in digs with 17 – her sixth straight match with 10-plus and 12th overall in SBC action.
 
Avery Breaux passed out 31 assists and was one dig shy of another double-double. Breaux surpassed 30 assists for the 14th time in 15 SBC matches.
 
UP NEXT
Louisiana wraps up regular season play on Saturday in Little Rock facing the Trojans (6-21, 4-11 Sun Belt) at 6:30 p.m. inside the Jack Stephens Center.
 
After the match in Little Rock, the Ragin' Cajuns turn their attention to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Thursday-Sunday, Nov. 21-24 in San Marcos, Texas. The team's official seed, and matchup for Thursday's first round contest, will be revealed Sunday evening.
