Louisiana, riding a three-game winning streak, heads to South Alabama for a Thursday (Jan. 24) morning matchup
LAFAYETTE – After a successful three-game homestand, which saw Louisiana Women's Basketball (5-11, 3-2 SBC) collect three straight Sun Belt Conference wins, the Ragin' Cajuns now hit the road to Mobile, Ala., to face off with the South Alabama Jaguars (14-3, 3-3) in a Thursday morning game at the Mitchell Center with tip scheduled for 11:05 a.m.

PREVIEWING THE GAME: Louisiana and South Alabama split the two meetings between the two programs, with South Alabama taking the game at the CAJUNDOME, 72-57, and Louisiana returning the favor in the last matchup, taking down South Alabama at the Mitchell Center, 59-56. In fact, over the last seven matchups, Louisiana and South Alabama have traded off in victories, with neither team having strung together back-to-back wins since Louisiana ripped off three straight from Jan. 15, 2014 to Jan. 17, 2015.
All-time South Alabama leads the series 37-16, with the Jaguars holding a 5-20 lead in Mobile. Over the past four meetings at South Alabama, the two teams have split the games, with Louisiana winning the last meeting in Mobile.
REVIEWING THE PREVIOUS GAME: Louisiana won its third-straight conference game with one of its best defensive performances of the season, taking down ULM, 52-45, on Saturday, Jan. 19 at the CAJUNDOME. During the game, Louisiana held ULM to 28 percent field goal percentage, the best number Louisiana has held an opponent to this season and the lowest since holding Georgia Southern to 25 percent on Feb. 10, 2018.
Louisiana was also strong in protecting the perimeter, holding ULM to 8.3 three-point field goal percentage, the lowest Louisiana has held a team to, with a minimum of 15 attempts, since holding Southeastern Louisiana to 5.6 field goal percentage from the arc on Feb. 5, 2010.
Sophomore center Ty'Reona Doucet finished the game with a team-high 12 points and 10 rebounds, recording her eighth double-double of the season and first in conference play. While freshmen guards Brandi Williams added 12 points of her own, while also grabbing five rebounds, and Andrea Cournoyer dropped 11 points to give Louisiana three in double-figures in the game.
Redshirt freshman Kristen Daniels and freshman Jazmyn Womack each grabbed five rebounds, with Womack's five coming off the bench, to help power Louisiana. The Ragin' Cajuns had 13 points off of turnovers and 11 second chance points, which were both key numbers in Louisiana's win.
RAGIN' CAJUNS BRICKWALL: Over the past three games, Louisiana has given up a conference-best average of 49.0 points per game. When considering the Mid-Major Top-25 Louisiana has the fifth-best defensive points per game average over the past three games.
HIGH FLYING FRESHMEN: Williams and Cournoyer have been scoring machines over the first two weeks of conference play, each averaging double-figures in Sun Belt play. With Williams averaging 14.6 ppg., and AC averaging 13.0 ppg., making them the top two scoring freshmen in Sun Belt Conference play.
AVERAGING A DOUCET SPECIAL: Doucet has been extremely consistent over the first two-plus months of the season. She is currently averaging a double-double, scoring 13.4 points per game and grabbing 10.1 rebounds per game. Doucet's numbers, 13th in scoring and second in rebounding, means that she is the only player in the Sun Belt that averaged a double-double since the beginning of the season.
Doucet added to her Doucet Specials with a double-double against ULM, the eighth of the season for the sophomore from Ville Platte, La. The eight double-doubles are the most recorded by anyone in the conference, and she sits 28th in the conference in double-doubles recorded.
WILLIAMS HAS IMPRESSED: Williams has been impressive through Louisiana's first 16 games, scoring 11.6 points per game, the second most on the team, while shooting .385 percent from the field. The 11.6 ppg., rank Williams second on the team in scoring and when looking at the Sun Belt Conference, Williams is the leading scorer among freshmen.
LOUISIANA FRESHMEN HAVE BEEN KEY: Louisiana's four freshmen have played key parts on the court over the Ragin' Cajuns' 15 games played so far. Louisiana's freshmen have averaged 29.1 points per game total, which is just under half of the 60.4 points per game that Louisiana is averaging as a team and the four freshmen are shooting .373 percent playing a key part the team shooting percentage of .381.
SNAPPING A SKID: Louisiana's 57-54 win over Georgia State (Jan. 10) snapped a nine-game losing streak, which extended back to Louisiana's last win against Jackson State on Nov. 19. It was the longest losing streak under head coach Garry Brodhead since his first season at the helm in 2012-13 when Louisiana dropped 11-straight games.
WHAT THE JAGUARS BRING: South Alabama began the season going 11-0, including a win over the Southeastern Conference's Alabama Crimson Tide, 72-67, on Dec. 5, 2018. But the Jaguars did drop its first conference game, falling to Appalachian State, 71-63, on Jan. 3. Over the past two games, the Jaguars have gotten back to winning ways, taking down Georgia State (68-59) and Georgia Southern (69-53) to bring a two-game winning streak into the matchup with Louisiana.
As a team South Alabama ranks fourth in the conference in scoring offense and fifth in scoring defense. Where the Jaguars do rank high is in field goal percentage, where they rank second in the conference and field goal percentage defense, where they sit at the top of the league.
Savannah Jones leads South Alabama in scoring, averaging 14.1 points per game, but she is not alone in terms of scoring in double-figures. Shaforia Kines (14.0 ppg.) and Antoinette Lewis (13.8 ppg.) round out South Alabama's three top scorers.
Lewis leads the Jaguars in rebounding, averaging 8.8 rebounds per game, with 150 total boards grabbed through the season. Those numbers rank Lewis fifth in the conference in rebounds per game. Lewis also leads the team in blocks (32) and is second on the team in steals (20). Leading South Alabama in steals is Kines with 26, while Dama Telemaque's 60 assists are the most on the team.
