Louisiana slows down UT Arlington’s fast start, tops Mavericks in four sets

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball came away victorious in its Sun Belt Conference opener on Friday at Earl K. Long Gym, rebounding from an opening set loss to defeat UT Arlington 3-1 (15-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-18).

The Ragin' Cajuns (9-6, 1-0 Sun Belt) tightened their defense after the first set, forcing a decrease in the Mavericks' offensive production the remaining three sets after a 21-kill effort from the visitors in the opening frame.

As a result, Louisiana was able to overtake UT Arlington (6-5, 0-1 Sun Belt) as the two teams battled through 29 ties and 12 lead changes in the final three stanzas.

The momentum swung in the Cajuns favor after back-to-back kills from Nia Antoine and Hanna Rovira erased a 23-22 deficit in the second set and led to a victory which forged a tie in the match.

Rovira and Dree'Ana Abram punctuated the set-changing rally in the third set, combining for back-to-back blocks that capped off a four-point spurt resulting in a 17-15 lead. The Ragin' Cajuns never trailed again.

Louisiana out-killed UTA 14-8 and held the visitors to a .032 hitting percentage in the match-clinching fourth set. The final push was back-to-back kills from Desiree Johnson followed by a spike of an overpass by Antoine which stretched the lead to 23-17.

LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Antoine scored a season-high 15 kills, committing only one attack error in 27 swings (.519 percentage). Abram and Hali Wisnoskie joined her in double figures with 10 apiece.
