Doubles Pair Of Garcia And Fabre Lead @RaginCajunsWT After Day One Of Islander Open

9/15/2018 9:32:00 AM | Women's Tennis

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – Junior Marina Rodriguez Garcia and freshman Ai Noa Fabre, paired up in doubles, went 2-0, including an exciting 7-6 (12) win to reach the finals in the Dolphin Draw, to pace Louisiana Women's Tennis, who went 4-2 as a team, at the first day of the Contender CrossFit Islander Open in Corpus Christi, Texas.

ON TO THE FINALS: Garcia and Fabre began their day winning 6-3 over UT-Rio Grande Valley's duo of Dominique Ibarra and Ana Platisa to move onto the quarterfinals in the Dolphin Draw.  It was in the Louisiana pair's second match of the day were their early season merit was tested.

The Louisiana duo matched up with Texas A&M – Corpus Chrsiti's pair of Vanessa Reinicke and Carolina Bulatovic in a marathon match that was pushed to a tiebreaker that ended up having 26 points scored between the two pairs.  Garcia and Fabre found the drive to come away with the final two points, after a back and forth tie breaking affair, to win the match 7-6 (14-12) and with a celebrative hug where Fabre leaped into Garcia's arms, the Louisiana duo punched their ticket to the finals.

TWO PAIRS EACH WIN ONE: Louisiana's other two doubles pairs each won their first matches of the tournament, before falling in the quarterfinals.  Sophomore Floriane Picaut and junior Clara Mantaux, playing in the Shark Draw, cruised to a 6-1 win over Texas A&M – Kingsville's pairing of Valerie Ruiz and Laura Montalvo.  Picaut and Mantaux would be knocked into the third-place match with a 6-3 loss in the quarterfinals against AMCC's Camille Townsend and Mariya Shumeika.

Louisiana's third doubles duo of sophomore Dana Radovanovic and freshman Hoda Habib, who were attempting to navigate through the Island Draw, won their first match against Jayci Stewart and Taylor Parkinson, from Incarnate Word, 6-1.  But a close loss to Stephanie Baerman and Loren Tristan of AMUK, 7-5, placed the Louisiana pair into the third-place match.

SATURDAY'S ACTION: Garcia and Fabre will play for the championship in the Dolphin Draw when they face off with AMUK's pair of Lisa Carvajal and Maya Donkor starting at 11 a.m., at the Athletic Club in Corpus Christi.  Both Louisiana duos of Picaut/Mantaux and Radovanovic/Habib will look to finish strong in their respective draws as they each go for a third-place finish.

Singles will also begin, with seven members of the Louisiana squad beginning their quests for a championship in singles.  Fabre; Habib; Mantaux; Garcia; Radovanovic; Picaut and sophomore Morgan Forshag will all take the courts on Saturday in singles.
