Louisiana begins initial preparations for second season of Gerry Glasco’s tenure
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball enters the first full week of its fall practice season when the 2019 squad returns to the field at Lamson Park on Tuesday.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns officially opened the fall practice period, which is scheduled to run through Sunday, Oct. 21, when they took the field for the first session last Friday.
Â
Weekday sessions will primarily be centered around fundamentals, while weekends will consist of intrasquad scrimmages, and a few select games, which are open to the public.
Â
Head coach Gerry Glasco is in his first full session of fall workouts as he prepares for his second season leading the program.
Â
"The goal of the fall will be to incorporate the tremendous amount of returners we have with the tremendous amount of new talent that we've acquired and make a smooth transition into putting our best team on the field," Glasco said. "We will look at as many players in as many positions, and as many combinations, as we begin to create depth in our lineup.
Â
"It's also an opportunity to look at individuals who can play multiple positions and determine where they will be able to help us the most," Glasco added.
Â
Louisiana, in search of a 21st consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, returns seven starters from its 2018 season-ending lineup headlined by All-Sun Belt selections Alissa Dalton and Kara Gremillion and veteran catcher Lexie Comeaux.
Â
Summer Ellyson, a 20-game winner in 2018, returns as the lead pitcher. Also returning in the circle is senior Alison Deville and sophomores Casey Dixon and Carrie Boswell.
Â
A group of 11 newcomers are set to make their Ragin' Cajuns debut this fall and join in the competition for spots in the lineup. Included are four Division I transfers (Bailey Curry, Keeli Milligan, Julie Rawls and Kendall Talley), three junior college transfers (Morgan Gray, Kali Kitsinis and Tiana Patrick) and four incoming freshmen (Caylon Brabham, Rylee Keith, Kandra Lamb and Mila Rodriguez).
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns (41-16, 21-6 Sun Belt) completed their first season under Gerry Glasco's guidance in 2018, earning the program's 20th consecutive NCAA Tournament bid and advancing to the championship game of the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.
Â
Louisiana reached 40 wins for the 20th straight season and was ranked in both major national Top 25 polls the entire season, finishing No. 18/19 in the final edition of the rankings.
