Transfer from Northwestern State significantly raised offensive production levels last spring
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball strengthened its group of outfielders with the addition of Julie Rawls, as head coach Gerry Glasco announced she is joining the Louisiana roster in 2019.
Â
Rawls, a rising junior, spent the previous two seasons at Northwestern State.
Â
She made significant strides in her second season with the Demons as she raised her average to .296, increased her home run total to 10 and more than tripled her run production from her freshman season finishing with a team-high tying 36 RBI.
Â
"Julie is a five-tool athlete with speed, power and a great arm," Glasco stated. "She showed vast improvement as an offensive player during her sophomore season. Additionally, it is always exciting when you can add an elite-level athlete who is also outstanding in the classroom."
Â
The Hallsville, Texas product started 70-plus games in the outfield for NSU. She tracked down 113 fly ball outs and had 17 outfield assists (12 in sophomore season) during the timeframe.
Â
"Reaching double digits in outfield assists in a short amount of time caught my attention," Glasco remarked. "That is extremely exciting for me because we desire to place an emphasis on building and maintaining a great defense, as defense ultimately determines the outcome in championship play."
Â
Rawls was the MaxPreps Class 5A Player of the Year in Texas as a junior. She was also a three-time all-state selection and two-time District MVP as an outfielder.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns (41-16, 21-6 Sun Belt) recently completed their first season under Gerry Glasco's guidance, earning the program's 20th consecutive NCAA Tournament bid and advancing to the championship game of the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.
Â
Louisiana reached 40 wins for the 20th straight season and was ranked in both major national Top 25 polls the entire season, finishing No. 18/19 in the final edition of the rankings.
