Point guard one of 24 players at five-day Academy

XENIA, Ohio – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball player Marcus Stroman was one of 24 players selected to participate in the annual Captains Academy for NCAA Division I men's basketball captains, through Athletes in Action Basketball.

The 24 players selected come from 20 universities across the country, including India. The five-day Academy opened on Thursday and is scheduled through Monday (May 21).

Stroman, a native of Columbia, S.C., finished second in the Sun Belt Conference in assists per game (6.5) while leading the league in assist/turnover ratio (2.2). The 6-foot-2 point guard averaged 6.8 points per game and dished out 213 assists during the season – the fourth-most by a Ragin' Cajun in school history and the 12th-highest total among NCAA players during the season.

The Stroman marks the second consecutive year a Ragin' Cajuns player is participating in the Captains Academy. Ragin' Cajuns basketball alums Bryce Washington and Jonathan Stove were members of the 2017 Academy.

The purpose of the Academy is to equip, empower, and encourage student-athletes to be competent, confident, effective team leaders. Participants will engage in a variety of activities including personality testing, team-building exercises, conflict management techniques, case studies in leadership, cohort group breakdowns, communication lessons, and interviews with established leaders in business, sport, and the military. Attendees will develop a deeper view of leadership as identity as well as expand the scope of their leadership understanding in the areas of activity and service.

Clark Kellogg (CBS Sports), Tim Kight (renowned sport psychologist), Mark McGinnis (SEAL Leadership), and a good array of NBA and former college captains headline the experience for the players. The Academy is driven and supported by a fine AIA Staff.

This is the fourth year Athletes in Action Basketball has staged its Captains Academy. Over this span, 42 schools have sent player representatives from across 21 Division 1 conferences.

Athletes in Action is an international sports organization that champions faith, character, and victory beyond competition. AIA hosts events, sends teams, and develops total athletes and coaches globally. 'For the good of the game, the growth of its people, to the glory of God' is their prime motivation.
