Cajuns Lose In First Round Of SBC Championships

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – In their first-round match at the Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Championships, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team lost to the Georgia Southern Eagles, 4-2, at the Peachtree City Tennis Center to wrap up their 2018 season sitting at 14-11.

Louisiana got wins in doubles from freshmen Floriane Picaut and Dana Radovanovic along with the pairing of senior Kelly Drew and sophomore Marina Rodriguez Garcia.  But they're lone win in singles came from Garcia as the Cajuns couldn't hold the lead they took into singles.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Doubles): Louisiana's freshmen pairing of Picaut and Radovanovic got the Cajuns off on the winning foot, taking their match at No. 1, 6-2, over the Georgia Southern pairing of Bujan and Monsey.  The Cajuns then locked up the doubles point, and a 1-0 lead in the match, with a win at No. 2 when Drew and Garcia took care of business winning 6-4 against the Eagles' duo of de Winter and Boixader.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Singles): Georgia Southern got their first win of the day when at No. 1 Arianne de Winter beat Drew in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 to tie the match up at 1-1.  Shortly after that the second match of the day finished, with the Eagles' Emilia Bujan beating Picaut in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 2 to give Georgia Southern the 2-1 lead.

Louisiana's lone win in singles came next, when Garcia took down Georgia Southern's Charlotte Van Diemen in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, to tie the match back up with the score sitting at 2-2.  But the Eagles would take the next two matches from the Cajuns to finish off the match.

At No. 4 the Eagles' Paula Boixader beat senior Abby Johnson, 6-4, 6-2, to move Georgia Southern one win away from clinching the match.  And the Eagles got that win right after their win at No. 4, when at No. 6 Mila Hartig beat freshman Morgan Forshag in what was the longest match of the day.  Forshag pushed things to a breaker in the first set, dropping the first set breaker 7-4, and she fell in the second set to lose the match, 7-6(4), 6-0.

Georgia Southern's 4-2 win wrapped up their first-round win and ended the Cajuns season.
