@RaginCajunsWBB Takes Down Xavier (La.), 62-52, In Exhibition Game
12/15/2018 4:41:00 PM | Women's Basketball
LAFAYETTE – A strong fourth quarter, and another double-double from sophomore center Ty'Reona Doucet, gave Louisiana Women's Basketball (2-7) a 62-52 win over Xavier (La.) in an exhibition matchup at the CAJUNDOME.
Doucet finished with a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard Skyler Goodwin (16 points) and freshman guard Diamond Morrison (10 points) each finished in double-figures to help Louisiana come away with the win. During the fourth quarter Louisiana put the game to rest, outscoring Xavier (La.) 16-6 to finish off the 10-point win.
During the second quarter Louisiana began to push its lead into the double-digit realm, but over the first three minutes Xavier (La.) hung around and with 5:30 to go, following a Gina Smith layup, Louisiana only held a two-point lead, 22-20. But a 16-2 run by the Ragin' Cajuns, started at the 5:07 mark by a Morrison three-point basket, allowed Louisiana to pull away from Xavier (La.) and Louisiana took a 38-28 lead into the locker room.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Second Half): Xavier (La.) answered Louisiana's strong finish to the first half and would eventually outscore Louisiana 18-8 in the third quarter to cut into Louisiana's lead. But during the quarter, Louisiana would not let Xavier (La.) take the lead, and the closest the Gold Nuggets would get to taking the lead was when they tied it on a three-point basket from Hill with four seconds left, and the 46-46 score carried into the final quarter.
Louisiana came out in the fourth quarter determined not to let Xavier (La.) steal the game, and a 5-0 run, following a free throw made by Xavier (La.) within the first minute, put Louisiana back in the driver's seat. As the quarter carried into the final five minutes, Louisiana hit a 7-0 run, capped off by a Goodwin jump shot with four minutes left, pushing its lead to 58-49.
Xavier (La.) attempted to answer, but strong defense down the stretch by Louisiana, with Xavier (La.) not scoring over the final three minutes, gave Louisiana the push it needed to come away with the 62-52 win.
