LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Women's Basketball finally tips off the 2018-19 season with a quick tune-up, before the regular season truly begins, when the LSU-Shreveport Pilots come to the Cajundome for an exhibition matchup on Thursday, Nov. 1, with tip-off scheduled for 6:30 p.m. live on Cox Sports TV. Â
Â
HOW TO WATCH/LISTEN: CST will broadcast the game with Dan McDonald on play-by-play and new color analyst Lawana Stokes will cover the action. On the radio the familiar voice of Steve Peloquin will call the game on 960 AM, with the pregame show starting at 6 p.m.
Â
FREE HALLOWEEN FUN: Admission to the game is free for anyone, with Louisiana Men's Basketball holding its Vermilion & White Scrimmage right before the game against LSU-S, with that tipping at 4 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come to the game dressed in Halloween costumes, and a Halloween Costume Contest will be held during the game.
NEW SEASON, NEW CAJUNS: Louisiana is coming off its fourth straight winning season, after going 17-16 (10-8 SBC) during the 2017-18 season reaching the Sun Belt Conference Women's Basketball Championships semifinals for the fourth straight season. For the first time the 2013-14 season Louisiana and head coach Garry Brodhead will be going at it with no seniors, but the Cajuns do return some experience.
Sophomore Skyler Goodwin and Ty'Reona Doucet each return having gotten plenty of playing time during the 2017-18 season and sophomore Jomyra Mathis will look to add to the mix, having worked hard during the off-season. Junior Jasmine Thomas will also look to bounce back from a tough, but productive, 2017-18 season as the returning Ragin' Cajuns get ready to lead the new members of the team.
Junior-transfers Caroline Rivera (Casper College) and Kendall Bess (Tyler JC) bring some experience at the collegiate level and should both play a role for Louisiana throughout the season. The remainder of the Cajuns are all freshmen, as Andrea Cournoyer; Brandi Williams; Diamond Morrison; Kristen Daniels and Jazmyn Womack round out the roster for the 2018-19 season.
THIRD-TEAM NOD: Goodwin was named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Third Team as a part of the conference's preseason awards, announced on Oct. 24. Goodwin averaged 9.6 points per game and 32.0 minutes per game during the 2017-18 season and led the Cajuns in both categories.
It was not her first conference honor, as she was named to the 2018 SBC Women's Basketball All-Tournament Team following the 2018 SBC Women's Basketball Championships. During the three games Louisiana played in she averaged 17.7 points per game, shot 58 percent from the field and scored a tournament game high 28 points against Georgia Southern in the first round.
WHAT THE PILOTS BRING: LSU-S went 31-2 during the 2017-18 season, and won the Red River Athletic Conference Championship, taking down Our Lady of the Lake, 77-64, to win the tournament. The Pilots then made a trip to the 2018 NAIA National Tournament, falling in the first round to Menlo College, 91-79, to end the season.
Â
It is the first time since the 2012-13 season that the Pilots and Cajuns have met, and overall Louisiana leads the series 4-1, having won the last matchup 83-42. All five previous meetings have been in Louisiana, but this is the first time since 2010 that the game will be played in the Cajundome.
Â
SEASON STARTS NEXT WEEK: Louisiana will tip-off its regular season next week, on Tuesday, Nov. 6, when the Lamar Cardinals come into the Cajundome for a 5 p.m. start. That game will be broadcast on ESPN+, with Dan McDonald and Lawana Stokes handling the commentary duties.
TWO-PACK SPECIAL: The Louisiana Lagniappe 2-Pack is a special offer giving Ragin' Cajuns fans a ticket to the final two home football games of the 2018 season (Georgia State on Nov. 10 and South Alabama on Nov. 17), as well as a bonus ticket to either home-opener for Louisiana Men's and Women's Basketball.Â
The entire deal costs only $20 per ticket, and it means that fans can get in Cajun Field for the final two home games, and for the added cost of free, fans can choose between either the Louisiana Women's Basketball's season opener against Lamar or the Louisiana Men's Basketball season opener against the Virgin Islands (Nov. 6 at 7:15 p.m.).
Fans can visit RaginCajuns.com or click here to access the 2-Pack deal. Walk-up orders can also be taken at the Louisiana Athletics Ticket Office at the Cajundome, or by phone at (337) 265-2357.
