Louisiana makes a stop in Little Rock on Saturday before returning home
JONESBORO, Ark. – Arkansas State picked up a straight sets sweep (25-18, 25-20, 25-16) over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team on Friday at First National Bank Arena.
Â
The Red Wolves (11-9, 3-4 Sun Belt) benefitted from a .286 hitting percentage while limiting the Ragin' Cajuns (10-11, 2-5 Sun Belt) to a .117 hitting percentage.
Â
Friday's match marked the first of a Sun Belt Conference home-and-home between the two West Division foes. ASU returns the visit on the final day of the regular season (Nov. 11).
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Arkansas State used an 18-11 edge in kills to stay ahead of Louisiana in the opening set. The Ragin' Cajuns trimmed their deficit to 20-18 after back-to-back kills from Desiree Johnson and Dree'Ana Abram. A service error snapped the rally, then the ASU won the final four rallies to claim the set.
Â
The Red Wolves would have to dig out of early deficits in the second and third set as Louisiana opened both frames with a 3-1 run. The Ragin' Cajuns were unable to hold on to the early leads in both stanzas as the team's hitting percentage was below .100.
Â
Avery Breaux would score a kill to give Louisiana a 12-11 lead in the second set, but the momentum shifted when the Red Wolves followed with a 6-0 run and never trailed again.
Â
Breaux contributed two kills and assisted on another as the Ragin' Cajuns remained in striking distance in the third set. An attack error by ASU's Carlisa May pulled Louisiana within three, 16-13, but another 6-0 run gave the Red Wolves enough distance to finish off the set.
Â
LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Abram and Nia Antoine both tallied a team-high six kills and both hit above .200. Abram and Hanna Rovira each posted multiple blocks.
Â
Libero Sydney Davis led the way with 11 digs, reaching double digits for the 18th consecutive outing. Breaux added 15 assists to her season-best tally of four kills.
Â
