Louisiana Baseball Picked To Win West In SBC Coaches’ Poll

NEW ORLEANS, La. – For the second straight season since the Sun Belt Conference went to divisions in baseball, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns squad found themselves atop the Sun Belt Conference baseball preseason coaches' poll as the favorite to win the West Division, the league office announced on Tuesday.

"It's always an honor to have the other coaches in the conference recognize your program for your hard work and potential," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "We still have a lot of work to do to reach that potential. You don't have to be ranked first to be first. You still have to go out and play the games. We aren't going to be able to just claim the West Division because of this poll. Our guys know that they are entitled to nothing, and that they will have to work hard to reach our goals including winning a conference championship."

The Ragin' Cajuns tallied 68 points in the poll with nine first-place votes to lead the West. UT Arlington was tabbed second in the West with 56 points and two first place votes. Texas State claimed the final first place vote in the West coming in third with 51 points, while Arkansas State (36 points), Little Rock (27 points) and ULM (11 points) rounded out the West.

In the East Division, South Alabama was the unanimous favorite picking up all 12 first place votes with 72 points overall. Coastal Carolina was picked second in the East with 59 points. Georgia Southern (43 points), Troy (41 points), Georgia State (20 points) and Appalachian State (16 points) rounded out the voting in the East.

Louisiana opens the 2018 season on the road at Texas on Feb. 16 with a three-game series at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
