Louisiana Golf Wraps Up Season At Sun Belt Championship

MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golf team saw its 2016-17 season come to an end on Monday as the squad finished in tenth place at the 2017 Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship with a three-round score of 31-over par (883) at the par-71, 6,900-yard course Raven Golf Club at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.
 
"Obviously I'm disappointed with not only the week of conference but the whole year," head coach Theo Sliman said. "The lack of competitiveness from the team this year is not what I expected coming into the year. Back in August I had high hopes of what this program could have achieved.
 
"It was an honor for me to coach this group of seniors. I look forward to them continuing to represent the program as alumni. We have two underclassmen who spent the majority of the season in the lineup. They will need to continue to work this summer to improve their game as they are now the leaders of this team going into next year."
 
Troy finished stroke play in first place with a 54-hole score of 3-over (855). The Trojans will be joined by Georgia Southern (+12, 864), Arkansas State (+20, 872) and Georgia State (+20, 872) in match play to decide the Sun Belt title.
 
Georgia Southern's Steven Fisk claimed individual medalist honors winning a four-player playoff after carding a three-round score of 3-under (210).
 
Senior Fernando Cruz Valle notched a top 25 finish in his final round with the Ragin' Cajuns placing in a tie for 16th at 5-over (218). The top 25 performance is the 25th of Cruz Valle's career.
 
Ragnar Gardarsson and Thomas Strandemo finished just outside the top 25 in a tie for 28th at 8-over (221). Triston Elston placed in a tie for 37th at 12-over (225), while Aron Juliusson rounded out the scoring in 58th at 24-over (237).
